The Project title:
Heat Recovery enhancement at
the Jorf Lasfar phosphoric acid
production plant
•
Introduction of two Heat Recovery Systems
in the process of sulfuric acid production
• The heat recovered allows for increased
power generation
• This will result in a reduction of the global
primary energy consumption

The Jorf Lasfar plant (OCP)
Technical description of the project activity
 The phosphoric acid process uses phosphates
to produce phosphoric acid and fertilizers
 The sulphuric acid processing facility uses a
MONSANTO process, an exothermic process

The Jorf Lasfar plant (OCP)
Technical description of the project activity
Current use of the heat released from this process:
- 70% recovered
to produce steam / process
&
to generate power
- 28%
in the cooling water (Atlantic ocean)

Project description
• Technical features :
– Components to be installed : two heat recovery systems (HRS)
– Expected production : 50 t/hr additional sat. steam at 9.5 bars
– Additional power capacity : 8 MW
• Financial issues :
– Total cost of the project : US $ 18.2 million (MAD 200 million)
15.9 installation cost,
2.3 development cost
• Timing :
– Starting of works : 2005 (1st & 2nd HRS)
– Full operation of the two HRS : 2006.

OCP-HRS Project
• Methodology :
Baseline methodology
– “Baseline methodology for power generation from enhanced heat recovery
following the retrofit of existing industrial processes” (Ecosecurities)
ACM 0002 (revised PDD)
• Approach : option 48 (a) of the Marrakech Accords
– Demonstrate that the project is not BAU
– Determine the most likely scenario in absence of the project
– Determine the avoided emissions by calculating the Projected Operating
Margin: Weighted CEF of the national power plants
• Calculations :
– Through the crediting period, the CEF moves down from 0.803 (2006) to
0.682 (2009) and then increases to 0.724 (2015)
– Over the crediting period, the expected CER are about 850,000

OCP-HRS Project
Sustainable development
• Environmental benefits :
– GHG emission free power generation
– Reduction of atmospheric pollutants SO2, NOx, CO
• Socio-economic benefits :
– Improvement of the competitiveness
– Net benefits for the country’s economy

ONE-Street lighting project
Baseline methodology
• Methodology :
Described in paragraph 49 of Appendix B of the simplified M&P.
• Approach :
Displacing Electricity : BAU emissions – project emissions
Emissions: Number of devices * power of device * average
annual operating hours * emission coefficient (as for 1.D.) / grid loss
• Calculations :
– Over the crediting period, the expected CER are about 150,000
