Willow by footbridge at play park end of playing field This tree lost a large branch during recent gales. Simon thinks this tree has reached the end of its life. He advises pollarding at about 5ft, This will leave the roots undisturbed and the bank stable. Re-growth can be trimmed every 3 years. Large trees close by will fill the gap and outlook will not be altered. 2. Large willow tree by the ford outside The Store. Simon will have the ivy cleared from the trunk so the health of the tree can be assessed. There did not seem to be immediate danger. 3. Large Silver Maple on the Pittens Walk side of the Play park. Simon pointed out that this is likely to shed branches as a result of the top being taken out (?) He will arrange replanting, he suggested another Acer "Crimson King". There is a "Crimson King" on the opposite side by the entrance to the play park. This needs discussion, do we want a native tree? If so what - lime? copper beech? Horse Chestnut? Hornbeam etc. 4. Lower branches of trees overhanging the footpath from the ford to the play park will be removed. 5. 2 branches to be removed from tree obscuring lighting subway in Timbers at entrance to Simon will arrange all this work to be carried out by SHDC when he has the goahead after the PC meeting. We need a decision about the Silver Maple and its replacement. We also discussed the trees on the left as Pittens Barn is approached, He had marked a selection for felling some time ago. These trees could be felled, ivy cleared and the area opened up for camp building etc. This would not be done by SHDC as it not essential i.e. no pathway obstructed, no danger etc. We would have to fund this. It is important to gain as much opinion as possible Athenia`s willow tree will be tackled when I return from holiday at the end of July. I will gather a work party to take off the ivy, properly prune the branches etc, This agenda can also be seen on www.aveton-gifford.co.uk
