Coppice News!
Friday 21st April 2017
Number 20
Chair of Governors
At the end of last term we said ‘Farewell’ to our Chair of Governors, Miles Silva. Miles has dedicated an extraordinary 17
years to School Governance and over the years at Coppice has supported headteachers and staff with a range of very
important issues, allowing the school to grow from strength to strength. We thank Miles enormously for the work he has
done and all that he has achieved and wish him enjoyment now that he has more free time.
We are delighted to welcome Andrew Naismith as our new Chair of Governors. Andrew has served on the Coppice
Governing Body for a number of years and has had two children benefit from all that Coppice has to offer so he knows the
school well from both a strategic governor level and from the point of view of a parent. We wish Andrew all the best with
the new role and look forward to growing and developing the school further.
Rarely, things happen at school that cannot be resolved by the headteacher. In the event that your require the support
and direction of the Chair of Governors, please write to the school, addressing the letter clearly: FAO Andrew Naismith,
Chair of Governors. The complaints procedure can be found on the school website:

Marvellous Mathematician!
We are so proud to announce that our very own Deetya from 4R has won the INFINITY 2017 Numeracy Challenge. Deetya
writes:
“I participated in INFINITY 2017 Numeracy Challenge, and won the championship. There were four rounds, every time
getting more participants and finally I came 1st. I was the youngest being in Year 4 while others were in Year 5 and 6. I
was given my medal and certificate by the Mayor of Redbridge.”
What a remarkable young lady and such a credit to our school. We will have Deetya teaching some of our maths lessons
soon!
Wedding Belles
Over the Easter holidays, two of our teachers got married! We congratulate Mrs Baker (who is retaining her name) and
Ms Hobart, who is the newly named Mrs Finlay. The sun shone for both of them and they both had wonderfully happy
days! Do pass on your congratulations if you see them.
10p Tuesdays
At the PTFG meeting, 10p Fridays were discussed and it was decided that it is a great idea but falling on a Friday makes it
difficult with so many other events happening on Fridays. We will now collect 10ps on a Tuesday!
For those of you who are new to Coppice, 10p Tuesday is a year group saving scheme. The idea is that you bring in as
many 10ps as you can on a Tuesday and hand it in to your class envelope. It doesn’t matter if you have 1 10p or 10 10ps.
Each week, the admin team will add the year group total and put it in the school bank account for children to access when
they are in Year 6. Depending on how much money they have saved, they will be able to use it towards celebrations of
their choice, for example a residential trip, an end of year prom or leavers’ sweaters. Each Monday, in celebration
assembly, we will announce the winning year group for their 10p contributions and award them the “Savings Piggy Bank”.
On a termly basis we will report how much money each year group has in their pot.
Parent Consultation Evening
On Thursday 27th April we will hold parent consultation evening. School will close at 1:30pm. An After School Club will run
from 1:30pm-5:30pm. Please call the school office if you would like to book a place in the club. Spaces are limited, so this
will be first come, first served.
Senior Leadership Structure
During the last PTFG meeting, it became apparent that it is not clear for parents who is who at Coppice. Whilst everyone
is very happy to help you at the school, we do all have responsibilities for different areas of the school and, if you speak
with the appropriate person then we can deal with your queries much more quickly. At Coppice we have the following
Senior Leadership Team:
Mrs Clare Pike
Headteacher
Mr Michael Fernandez
Deputy Headteacher
Mrs Claire Glendon
Higbee
School Business
Manager
Mr Evan Hollows
Director of Learning
Ms Annette Graham
Assistant Headteacher
Mrs Rebecca Taylor
Assistant Headteacher
Mrs Kate O'Riordan

Mrs Janice Adams
Designated

Although we all wear many ‘hats’, the following list of responsibilities may help you to talk to the right person if you have
any queries, need any advice or require a meeting. If you would like to email any of the Senior Leadership Team, please
write to the admin email address marked for the attention of the relevant staff member.

Have you had an Easter Holiday Clear out?!
The PTFG are looking for your old belongings that still have some life in them. We needs toys and games for the After
School club. Have you got a wooden dolls house, complete jigsaw puzzles, lego, complete games, table football, air
hockey? If you have any suitable toys of games, we would be really grateful. Please bring into school on Friday 5th May
and bring to the PTFG shed in the junior playground.
Are you a face painting whiz?
We are looking for talented individuals who could help us at our Summer Fayre on Saturday 17th June. Face painting is
really popular with our children and we’d love to have someone really talented paint the children’s faces this year. Please
make yourself known to the school office or a member of staff if you have this hidden talent. We’re happy to provide
equipment!
School Uniform Reminder
Please ensure your children have full school uniform. We ask parents to ensure children are wearing black school shoes
and they should not have any labels or branding on them. Could girls and boys with hair long enough to tie up, please also
tie their hair back either with a blue, black, grey or white hairband or alice band. Please can girls avoid wearing the very
large bows in their hair. Boys should not be wearing tracksuit bottoms with branding. Our school uniform is something we
are really proud of and we want children to represent our school appropriately. Don’t forget, you can purchase school
uniform online and through the school office.
Money
At school we have occasions when children are invited to bring money into school. It is not possible for us to take
responsibility for the money unless it is brought to the school office in an envelope with your child’s name on it and what
the money is for eg Joe Bloggs, Class 4Q, bagel. If money is needed for an activity after school, the same process needs to
be followed. In the event that money goes missing or is stolen, we will try our best to help children find it again, but we
cannot reimburse money that has not been presented to the school office. Thank you for your support with this.
Family Bingo Prizes
The PTFG are organising a Family Bingo session on Friday 19th May and we need prizes! Have you still got unwanted
Christmas presents laying around? Do you own or work for a business who could sponsor a prize? We would welcome
prize contributions to the school office by Friday 12th May. Thank you for your support with this.
Personal Belongings
At school we provide everything children will need for their average day at school. Please do not give children pencil
cases, sets of colouring pens or playground equipment to bring into school. They do not need it and they get cross and
upset if other children use them or they get lost. If children bring things in from home that are not needed we will ask
them to take it home but if it comes back to school we will confiscate the item for two weeks.
