Our presentation will focus on four points:
 I. The assets to make the DR Congo a real
destination, and opportunities;
 II. The obstacles that encumber the
development of the Congolese tourism;
 III. Solutions and strategies;
 IV. Kinshasa in the center of an event,
"Malebo 2015" Tourism fair.
Strengths and opportunities
The DRC is a huge reservoir of diversity
but also a land of superlatives

Culture, arts and crafts
Cultural diversity:
With an extraordinary cultural heritage
carried by a population consisting of
about 450 ethnic groups, that is to say,
so many different cultures (Kuba, Pende
...)
Culture, arts and crafts
which results in many specific practices
such as dance, music, masks, habitat,
crafts and various arts.
Territorial Diversity:
The vastness of the territory (2,345,000 km2) put the DRC
at the eleventh place in the World and second in Africa.
The immensity of the Land coupled with the
ecosystem which presents
landscapes of exceptional beauty: savannah,
deep forests, mountains,
volcanoes, mangroves, rivers, waterfalls and an
ever-present river that
forms the backbone of the country, are assets
for tourism development in the DRC.
Opportunities of trips on the river
DRC remains a natural exception with:
Such a peculiar wildlife including many endemic
species (Okapi, Bonobo, northern white
rhinoceros, Congolese Peacock, ...) which gives it
a special status in the conservation and protection
of the environment.
Five of its natural sites are listed as World
Heritage by UNESCO. These are the national parks
of Virunga, Garamba, Kahozi - Biega, Salonga and
wildlife reserve of Okapi.

Prospect
With impressive assets (the list is not
exhaustive); DR Congo gives enormous
opportunities for development of tourism in
its various segments including eco-tourism,
river tourism, historical and cultural
tourism, congress tourism.

Looking at the strengths and
potentials that the DRC possesses,
a question arises:
Why Congolese tourism remains
embryonic and is not being
developed ?.
The country recorded less than
300,000 international arrivals in
2014
WHY
Obstacles
Several obstacles prevent the
emergence of tourism in the DRC.
These obstacles come from:
The inconsistency of the legislative and
regulatory framework (obsolete
regulations, absence of law)…
The security drifts resulting in administrative and
all kinds of police harassment, especially at the
borders. This makes it difficult to establish reliable
statistics.
With the laxity of the administration, there is a
difficulty to establish an efficient classification
system.
The weakness of the hotels infrastructures
(Kinshasa only has 3 hotel with five stars).
The promotional deficit in marketing and the lack
of training facilities is a result of non-qualified
personnel.
You need to call the schools to reinforce…
However, after crossing the desert,
the Congolese tourism is arising.
Since December 2014, tourism has
been established as an independent
department at the central
government level.
This ministry will ensure the development of the
Congolese Tourism, in collaboration with the
different provincial governments.
The resolution is now engaged to make tourism,
a sector that generates revenue which is
expected to contribute significantly and
effectively to the creation of national wealth.
One of the major strategies to boost
the tourism sector in the DRC is to
look and analyze the successful
experiences of other friendly
countries.
This explains and justifies the
presence of our delegation to the
present workshop in Johannesburg.
This comes and reinforces the partnership that
the city of Kinshasa is developing for nearly two
years with the Province of Kwazulu Natal with
which it intends to enrich its experience in the
following area:
The development of a law framework in Tourism
and various regulations
The hotel rating system and the tourism sector
in general
The establishment of the Tourism Satellite

Mangroves, Shrimp…
Seizing the opportunity offered by the
organizers of this workshop, we are
announcing the holding in Kinshasa, in
July 2015 of the first Tourism Fair called
"Malebo 2015".
You are cordially invited.
This is an opportunity for some to
rediscover Kinshasa and others to see this
dream city in its various facets.
Kinshasa, the capital
With an estimated population of about 12
million, Kinshasa is not only a
cosmopolitan city, but it is the place of
all national institutions of the DRC.
Its inhabitants are called Kinois;
themselves like to call their capital by
several nicknames: "Kin, Kin-Malebo,
Lipopo Leo Ville and Kin ya Banganga
(Kin of Great priests).
