carbon management action plan 2015 - 2018

CARBON MANAGEMENT
ACTION PLAN 2015 - 2018
This action plan applies to Gatwick
operations. In addition, our action
plans on Energy, Air Quality, Waste
Management and Surface Access
also contribute to our efforts on
carbon management.
This action plan is one of ten that
we have put in place for the period
2015-2018, covering the following
issues - air quality, biodiversity,
carbon, community, energy,
local economy, noise, surface
access, waste, and water quality
& consumption. Each Action
Plan shows how our S106 Legal
Agreement and our Decade of
Change sustainability strategy are
aligned to ensure that the airport
continues to grow sustainably and
our actions to deliver these two
programmes. We’ll continuously
monitor our performance and
report annually on our progress
against the actions. The action
plans will be reviewed and
updated in 2017-18 in conjunction
with the development of a new
S106 Legal Agreement.

CARBON MANAGEMENT
ACTION PLAN 2015 - 2018
Our Action Plan is designed to deliver our S106 obligations and Decade of Change targets on Carbon. Actions 1, 3, 4 and 5 are
Decade of Change actions; Action 2 is a S106 action; and Action 6 is a combined S106 and Decade of Change action.
DELIVERY
STRATEGY
2015
1.Maintain Gatwick’s proactive approach to carbon
management in line with our Decade of Change
goals by implementing our Energy and Carbon
strategy and our action plans on carbon, energy,
air quality, waste and surface access.
2.Include an update on our approach to climate
change in our annual Decade of Change reports
and publish an updated report on the airport and
climate change resilience by 2018.
3.
Contribute to development of the UK renewable
energy sector by continuing to purchase
renewable electricity for the airport campus.
4.Cleaner Vehicles Continue to apply the most
recent government-set standards for all roadrelated vehicles in GAL’s new vehicle contracts.
MONITORING &
REPORTING
5.Continue to include sustainability criteria in
Gatwick’s procurement processes.
6.Encourage airlines to continue developing reduced
engine taxiing to reduce fuel burn as part of
A-CDM, and explore ways to report performance.
7.Continue annual carbon footprinting with regular
in-year monitoring, and ensure retention of
external certification standards (e.g. The Carbon
Trust Standard, Airport Carbon Accreditation)
8.Report performance through internal governance
processes and externally via stakeholder groups,
websites and annual reports.

KEY HEADLINES FOR 2010-14:
• In the first half of our Decade of Change, we have reduced our Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 30% on an absolute basis
compared to our 1990 baseline – so we are over halfway to our 2020 target by that measure.
• On a per passenger basis, our Scope 1 and 2 emissions have reduced even more significantly - by 62% compared to
our 1990 baseline.
• In 2013 we began implementing Airport Collaborative Decision Making (A-CDM55) which enables better on time
performance, decreased fuel burn and improved noise management and performance.





• Gatwick Airport holds Airport Carbon Accreditation at Optimisation’ level which requires engagement with third
parties such as airlines and airport services providers on carbon footprint reduction, and engagement on surface
access modes (road, rail) with authorities and users.
• Gatwick Airport is also accredited with the Carbon Trust Standard which requires us to keep reducing our carbon
emissions and to recertify every two years.
LOOKING AHEAD
• We will continue to implement a low carbon roadmap for Gatwick in line with our Decade of Change targets to
reduce our carbon emissions by 50% (Total known CO2 at 1990 baseline vs 2020 scope 1 & 2 emissions) with 25%
of our energy to come from renewable sources.
