Video Investigation Guide: Implementation Science Purpose of the MTSS video series is: Key Vocabulary Terms, Concepts, and/or Learnings for this Video Video Segment One: Notes (pre-printed) The Office of Learning Supports (OLS) created a series of videos to be used to build understanding about the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) Framework, its Five Essential Components, and implementation science. Implementation Science Formula for Success, Stages, Systems, Organization, Fidelity, Sustainability, Efficient, Effective, Common, Practices, Training, Hospitable Environment Topic: Description Time: 00:00 – 1:48 Implementation science supports the sustainability of evidence-based practices. Formula for Success: (What x How x Where = Why) o What (effective interventions) o How (effective implementation methods) o Where (enabling contexts) o Why (socially significant outcomes) Donovan, M. et al (Eds.) 1999. How People learn. Washington, DC: National Academy Press. To present and be made aware of the information (Introduce/Illustrate) To determine what is familiar and what is new information. (Practice/Evaluate) To connect the familiar information to what the individual is currently working with/experiencing (Practice/Evaluate) To make meaning of new information and how it may be applied to the individual’s current setting. (Reflection/Mastery) Video Segment One: Prompt(s) for Reflection and/or Application: 1. Practice/Evaluate: The “Formula for Success” graphic is used for thinking about the development and implementation of a system; consider your current site/situation. Write a “formula for success”, listing an Topic: Description effective intervention (at individual or Time: 00:00 – 1:48 system-wide levels), implementation methods, and how your context is enabled for implementation of that intervention. Video Segment One: Viewer Response (personal) Video Segment One: Notes (personal) Video Segment Two: Notes (pre-printed) Adult Learning Principles and Goals of Inquiry Questions Office of Learning Supports Within the current educational climate, there is a need to be efficient and effective. Organizational literature and implementation science guide MTSS. For efficient and effective ways of doing business, characteristics that successful Video Segment Two: Prompt(s) for Reflection and/or Application: 1. Practice/Evaluate: What challenges or barriers limit your development of an efficient and effective organization? 2. Reflection/Mastery: In this video segment, characteristics of successful organizations were described. Within your MTSS Video online at: http://www.cde.state.co.us/mtss/implementationscience August 2016 - Pg. 1 Video Investigation Guide: Implementation Science Topic: Key concepts Time: 1:49 – 3:47 organizations have in order to get needs met and use resources well include: o common language, o common vision, and o common routine and experiences. Video Segment Two: Viewer Response (personal) Video Segment Two: Notes (personal) Video Segment Three: Notes (pre-printed) Topic: EvidenceBased Practices Time: 3:48 – 6:06 Topic: Key concepts implementation, how has your system Time: 1:49 – 3:47 worked to develop and sustain these characteristics (common language, vision, and routines/experiences)? Office of Learning Supports Implementation science is not an initiative, program, or project. “It’s the way we do our work.” There are evidence-based practices for: changing teacher behavior, administrator behavior, and help staff change their own behavior so that new practices can be put in place so that students can benefit. You don’t have to learn something new if you learn implementation science methods. Scalability (classroom, > school > district) and transfer of evidence-based practices is made possible with implementation science. “Implementing well” (i.e., with fidelity) supports improved outcomes. Time is limited; we do not have “time to waste”. Effective implementation ensures we address students’ needs efficiently and within the limited time we have. Video Segment Three: Prompt(s) for Reflection and/or Application: 1. Practice/Evaluate: Within your system, what practices are used for changing teacher behavior, administrator behavior, and help staff change their own behavior? Describe your professional development approaches; include the evidence-base associated with Topic: Evidence- them if you are aware of the basis for these Based Practices practices. Time: 3:48 – 6:06 2. Practice/Evaluate: Consider a time when something was implemented well, what conditions were in place. What facilitators (or “helpers”) assisted in implementation? Implementation science is a set of procedures that ensure that practices are implemented with fidelity, are sustainable, and are used for evaluating the organization’s progress and needs. Implementation science is the “how” to get the “what” done. There are mechanisms (e.g., training and policy changes) that are necessary but insufficient on their own to ensure effectiveness. Selection, training, coaching, establishing hospitable environments, and measuring fidelity of implementation are some elements of implementation science. Video Segment Four: Prompt(s) for Reflection and/or Application: 1. Practice/Evaluate: Self-assess your system according to the Stages of Implementation cited in this video segment. Provide rationale for your self-identified status. 2. Reflection/Mastery: What next steps Topic: Stages and regarding implementation science would you Attributes like to take? What additional information, Time: 6:07 – 9:21 resources*, or supports would you need? *For additional information on Implementation Science, you may choose to visit the National Implementation Research Network website: http://nirn.fpg.unc.edu/ Video Segment Four: Viewer Response (personal) Video online at: http://www.cde.state.co.us/mtss/implementationscience August 2016 - Pg. 3
