Fairtrade Fortnight
During our Fairtrade Fortnight we will be finding out what Fairtrade means and
how buying goods labelled Fairtrade can make a difference to poorer children
and families around the world. Children will be encouraged to recognise the
Fairtrade logo by searching for the hidden logo’s around the playroom.
The BIG Stampede.
ROMPS Nursery Class are extremely pleased to be part of Wild in Art’s BIG Stampede this year.
Funds raised from the BIG Stampede auction will provide a much-needed and appreciated donation to
Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity. All of the nursery children will be involved in decorating our Hippo
which will then be displayed in Hamilton from 23rd June to 3rd September as part of the 2017 sculpture
trail. Our Hippo will be returned to the nursery later in September.
If you have any ideas on a theme for painting our Hippo please let us know - hippo templates are
available at the entrance to the nursery. We look forward to seeing your ideas!
Parent Play
The Healthy Valleys Go2Play project has been delivering Active Play sessions to the preschool
children now for 6 weeks. The sessions are ½ play ranger lead and ½ free play, a structure which has
been widely recognised and proven to develop children’s fundamental movement skills, create new
friendships and confidence through active play, increase their communication skills and overall be
creative with lots of different equipment. For the hour the children are taking part in Active Play, they
are having great fun while learning new games and being physically active.
Healthy Valleys Go2Play team will be running a Parent Play Day for Robert Owen Memorial Primary on
Tuesday 28th March at 9am in the school gym hall and would love for you to come along, grandparents,
aunts and uncles welcome too! Please come along and see what fun we have each week.

What we’ve been learning
The children in the nursery have been continuing to learn about what Scotland and Lanark were like in
the past. We had a fantastic time visiting New Lanark where children had a hands on experience of
what it was like for children growing up in New Lanark in the past. On our trip we learned about the
different types of toys the children played with and enjoyed trying these out ourselves. We were also
able to see the wonderful waterfalls flowing very fast past the old cotton mill buildings! Inspired by our
trip, children have had the opportunity to make their own small dolls from clothes pegs – just like they
would’ve in the past.
The children have also been investigating the differences between houses in the past and houses now.
We have been creating our own ‘home from the past’ using all the ideas that we have been learning
about.
The children have also been experimenting using different paints and mixing colours to recreate the
‘Falls of Clyde’ and the famous New Lanark Water Wheel.
Moreover, children have been learning about who our school namesake, Robert Owen, was and that
he was famous for starting up one of the first ever nursery schools in New Lanark.
Wider achievement
We always want to hear all about children’s achievement outside nursery and would like to encourage
children taking part in any activities outside nursery such as swimming, dancing, football etc. to bring in
their certificates and medals and share this great achievement with all their friends.
World Book Day!
World Book Day is on Thursday 2nd March and is celebrating its 20th year. Children can dress up as
their favourite book character and bring in their favourite book. This is optional. Children will be issued
with a book token which can be taken to their local bookseller and swap it for one of the TEN new and
free World Book Day books. For more information please see the website: www.worldbookday.com.
Red Nose Day 2017
This year both the school and the nursery will be taking part in comic relief on Friday 24th March.
Children can participate by bringing a £1 donation to support Comic Relief and by wearing something
red or any red nose day items. There will be fun activities in the hall. Parents are welcome to collect
children from the nursery early to attend between 11.30am and 12pm. More information on red nose
day will follow soon.
Parents’ Natter Group
Thank you to all who attended our first parents’ nursery natter. The next Parent Natter Group will be on
Monday 20th March at 11am in the green room. This is a great opportunity for you to have your say
about what’s going on in the nursery and share ideas for improvement.
Come along and join us for a blether, a cuppa and a wee bit cake. All parents welcome.
Spring Tea
After last year’s daffodil tea being such a success this year we will be hosting a Spring Tea to support:
Little Heart Matter charity supporting anyone affected by the diagnosis of a single ventricle heart
condition – or half a working heart. And Nystagmus network charity for visually impaired. Our spring
tea will be on Thursday 30th March and any donations for raffle prizes and also home baking would be
greatly appreciated. Children will be making lots of lovely crafts that can also be purchased on this day.
Watch out for more information posters coming soon.
We hope you can come along and support the nursery and for these good causes.
