Part A: Competition Rules
Rules of the Game: The BUCS Lacrosse 8s Championships 2017 will be played under the FIL
Rules as according to normal BUCS League and Knockout fixtures with the following exceptions.
1. Time keeping: Teams must report to the pitch that they are due to play on and be ready to
play two minutes before the match starts. Failure to comply will result in the team conceding a
walkover for this match. It is the responsibility of the team captain to be aware of the time and
place of the matches in which their team is to participate.
2. Length of matches: All matches, including the finals, will be seven minutes each way with two
minutes for half-time.
3. Squad sizes: Each squad will consist of a maximum of 12 players which includes the eight
playing on the pitch and four replacements. The minimum size of a squad is 8 players. Teams
must register their players with the Event Coordinator using the registration form provided.
Student IDs will be checked on the day at registration.
4. Clash of colours: Each team must provide two kits. If there is a clash of colours the first named
team will change kits.
Women’s Competition
5. Start of the game- Each match will start with a centre draw. A team is permitted 3 players
on the centre circle. All other players must be 10m from the circle.
6. Restraining line/ Offsides
6.1 The halfway line will act as the restraining line
6.2 Attacking teams must keep 2 field players and their goalkeeper in their defensive half at
all times
6.3 Defending teams must keep 2 field players in their attacking half at all times
7. 15 Metre Arc Fouls
7.1 As there is no 15m arc, any fouls committed outside the 11m arc will be treated “open
field” plays and players should be position accordingly. There is no requirement for
umpires to clear a shooting lane for free positions awarded just outside the 11m, however
umpires may want to remind players to clear the lane once the whistle has blown.
8. All 11m & goal circle fouls are the same as normal 12-a-side rules
9. Re-starting the Game after a Goal
9.1 The game will be re-started after each goal by a goalie clear.
9.2 The umpire must award the goal before the goalie may clear the ball. The goalie will have
10 seconds to clear the ball from the goalie circle once the goal has been awarded.
10. Penalty cards
10.1 Yellow card penalty times should be halved to 1minute during tournament play
10.2 All other carded penalties remain the same
10.3 It is down to the tournament director to determine whether yellow/red cards should be
carried forwards throughout the tournament.
Men’s Competition
11. Players: Each team will consist of 1 goalkeeper, 2 defence, 3 midfield, 2 attack. No more
than 3 long poles are permitted on the pitch at the same time.
12. Start of the game/ Re-starts
12.1 Start of the game: each half will start with a centre
12.2 Restart after a goal: The game will be re-started after each goal by a goalie clear. The
referee must award the goal before the goalie may clear the ball. The goalie will have 4
seconds to clear the ball from the goalie circle once the goal has been awarded
13. Offsides
13.1 Attacking teams must keep 3 players in their defensive half at all times
13.2 Defending teams must keep 2 field players in their attacking half at all times
14. Penalties
14.1 Timeserving Technical fouls are reduced from 30 seconds to 15 seconds
14.2 Personal Fouls are reduced from 60 seconds to 30 seconds
14.3 If a player receives a four personal fouls in a match they will be expelled and referred to
the tournament director
Part B: Playing Regulations
1. Group matches: Teams will be drawn into 4 pools and play round robin in their group. The
top two teams in each pool will qualify for Championship competition and 3rd&4th place in each
group will progress to the Trophy competition Remaining teams will have the opportunity to
compete in a Plate competition, however this is not compulsory.
No extra time will be played in group matches. Points will be awarded on the following basis:

Bonus Point Loss
1 point for loss when scoring margin is half or less (ie. 42 or 5-3)
2. Forfeiture of Matches: If a team cannot fulfil their first fixture and any subsequent fixtures then
the opposition for that match(es) will be awarded 5 points and a 10-0 winning margin, and the
team will receive minus 1 point as a penalty. If the penalised team progresses to knockout
stages, any BUCS points won will be halved. A fine of £100 per fixture missed will be charged.
2.1 If a team cannot fulfil a group fixture and/ or wilfully refuses to play, after the first fixture
has been played, or wilfully abandons a match in progress, without the prior consent of the
referee, then subject to confirmation by the Appeals Committee the team will be expelled
from the competition. The opposition for that match will be awarded 5 points and a 10-0
winning margin.
2.2 If a team has been expelled from the competition for whatever reason the team shall be
deemed to have been awarded no group competition points and to have scored no tries or
points in the group matches. Dependant on the situation further action may be taken by the
BUCS Disciplinary Board.
2.3 Where a group match has been abandoned with the decision being made by the referee
or events team, either at half-time or at any time in the second half the result and any points
and tries scored by each team in the match shall stand.
2.4 Where a group match has been abandoned with the decision being made by the referee
and/or events team, during the first half the result shall be declared a draw.
2.4.1 In this instance where a group match has been declared a draw for that match each
team will be awarded two match points and any points and tries scored will count towards
the total points and tries scored by each team in all their group matches.
2.5 If at the conclusion of the group stage two teams are equal on competition points for any
position in the group, their position in the group competition table will be determined on the
result of the match between the two equal teams. The team that won the match shall be
deemed to have finished higher in the group competition table.
2.6 If the match between the two teams equal on competition points at the end of the group
stage was a draw, then the following process shall be used to determine the placing:
2.6.1 The team with the highest goal difference for all group matches:
2.6.2 The team that scored the highest number of goals for all group matches;
2.6.3 The tie will be resolved by the toss of a coin between the team captains concerned.
2.7 If at the end of the group stage more than two teams are tied on points across groups then
the following process shall be used to determine the placings and progression to knockout
stages:
2.7.1 The team with the highest goal difference (goals for - goals against) for games
played between the tied teams:
2.7.2 The team that scored the highest number of goals scored for games played
between the tied teams:
2.7.3 The team with the highest goal difference for all group matches:
2.7.4 The team that scored the highest number of goals for all group matches:
2.7.5 The tie will be resolved by the toss of a coin between the team captains concerned.
2.7.6
An Appeals Committee on the day of the competition will consist of… all decisions
made by the Appeals Committee will be final any matters that cannot be resolved
on the day shall be referred back to the BUCS office for investigation.
3. Knockout matches
3.1 During the knockout competitions, in the event of a match being drawn at the end of normal
time, extra-time will be played until a winner is determined. Extra-time will be in periods of
three minutes. After each period the teams will change ends without interval. In extra-time
the team which scores first will immediately be declared the winner without further play.
3.2 The duration of matches, including all finals, will be seven minutes each half with a twominute half time interval.
