Young Member Board University presentations guide
These guidance notes have been produced to provide a suggested approach on how best to use the
PowerPoint presentations templates with their intended audience.
The presentations
The PowerPoint’s have been produced for use with Affiliate members of IMechE, who are enrolled in
a degree course at a higher education institution. They are intended to meet three primary
objectives:
1. To provide careers guidance by explaining an aspect of the job hunting process e.g. writing a
CV;
2. To create an opportunity for the Affiliates to network with and speak to a professional
engineer, and gain an insight into their career journey;
3. To encourage the audience to maintain and upgrade their IMechE membership to Associate
level when they graduate, and pursue Professional Registration in the future.
This last point is very important and should always be emphasised at any event with university
students.
The presentations are not intended to be exhaustive and the presenter will therefore need to
explain more about the subject drawing from their personal experiences. You should focus on areas
you are most comfortable with, adding your own experiences and knowledge as relevant. The text in
the presentations should provide answers to specific questions and act as a general guide.
REMEMBER: There’s nothing quite as boring as someone reading out what’s displayed in a
PowerPoint presentation!
You will need to decide how best to use your own background to add context, and provide an
explanation of technical terms where it is deemed necessary.
REMEMBER: The more YMB members attending a presentation, the greater the variety offered to
the students to find out about different industries/ draw on different experiences.
Each YMB member attending should introduce themselves to the audience, giving a brief summary
about themselves e.g. job title, company worked for, university attended, etc.

Organising a university presentation
Each IMechE accredited university has an Academic Liaison Officer (ALO) who acts as a link between
the IMechE and the engineering students there. They are usually an engineering academic who is an
IMechE member and will be familiar with the student’s timetables. You will be provided with a list of
all ALO’s at IMechE accredited universities, which includes their contact details.
To organise a presentation, contact the ALO at your chosen local university and arrange a suitable
time to visit. This may be at the start/end of a lecture, during a lunch time or after classes. An hour
long slot is most appropriate, and will allow time for a general Q&A session to give students the
opportunity to get further information and advice.
The ALO will be responsible for providing a venue e.g. classroom, lecture theatre, etc. organising
laptop/projection and for informing the students about the event. This will incur no costs.
Advertising the event
The ALO will notify their students about the event, usually via email.
You can create a poster to advertise the event (templates have been provided) which the ALO can
post around the engineering department to advertise the event.
NOTE: If you can get support from the companies you work for, use their logos on the posters
advertising the events, as students are always interested in finding out more about potential
employers.
Other
It’s always great to give students something to take away with them, because students love
freebies!
There are a range of promotional items available for purchase from the IMechE Merchandise Store
at www.imeche.org (you will need to login to the website to access this) using your YMB budget.
You can also obtain promotional literature, such as copies of Engineering Opportunities Magazine,
Vision booklet etc, to hand out to students at events, as well as display banners and posters. To
obtain literature and other display materials, email your request to [email protected]
