Issue #14 2017 COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS ROUND TWO WRAP With another great weekend of rugby league behind us, we now look forward to the semi-final match ups this weekend. In the Men’s U23s we saw dominant displays from both Newcastle and Central Coast running out convincing winners. Newcastle showed off their class in front of good home crowd at Cessnock Sports ground against the North Coast, whilst the early parts of the game were a lot closer than the scored indicated. The Newcastle side showed their attacking prowess to stamp out the game 50-18. Whilst in Denman, Greater Northern got blown off the park in the early stages of the game with some free flowing football from the Central Coast edges. The Coast side never let the Greater Northern side back into the game running out winners 68-8. In the Southern Zone we saw two tightly fought games. At West Wyalong, Monaro continued their good form grinding out a tough win over the Riverina side on their home turf. Monaro held a tight 10-6 half time lead, to then eventually run out 28-12 victors. In Shellharbour, the South West Razorbacks couldn’t hold out the Illawarra South Coast Warriors. The Razorbacks held the lead for the majority of the match but with 17 minutes on the clock the Warriors took the lead and closed out the match. The Western Rams Ladies League Tag side continues their winning form, with a good attacking victory over the Riverina side to put themselves in a match up with a strong Illawarra South Coast side. The Illawarra South Coast sides’ class got them over the line in Shellharbour over the South West Razorbacks. The northern semi-final of the Ladies League Tag will see a replay of last year’s one point thriller final between North Coast defeating Newcastle and Central Coast after both sides showed they are the teams to beat once again. The campaign run in conjunction with NSW Office of Sport and six other major codes encouraged their clubs to create a positive environment for junior participants in grassroots sport; whilst addressing issues which arise from poor sideline behaviour including – abuse to officials, reduced volunteer numbers and reduced participation rates. The CRL would like to thank all clubs, players, friends and family for supporting the #shooshforkids round.
