What is cross coverage?
• Cross coverage is used to describe the process of providing
standard medical assessments, treatments, care, and services to
patients when the primary care physician (PCP) is not available,
when hands-on treatment is not required, or when patients are in
transition between doctors.
• Teladoc offers physicians immediate access to members’ health
records prior to a consultation. In addition, Teladoc offers immediate
documentation of consults, improved processes in communications,
medical standardization, and access to quality medical care.

Importance of Teladoc
Teladoc is important to many individuals, small business owners, and large corporations.
The cost of health care continues to rise, and Teladoc is a “first mover” in driving those
costs down and still provides quality medical service. The following are just a few reasons
why Teladoc is positioned favorably in the marketplace:
•
The Teladoc service is less costly and more efficient than urgent care clinics, primary
care offices, and emergency room facilities.
•
$1.9 trillion, or an average of $6300 per person, was spent on health care in 2004
and is projected to increase to $12,300 per person by 2015.*
•
45.8 million uninsured Americans have no coverage and therefore do not have
access to quality medical care, if any at all.**
•
Corporations want to save money on benefits, especially when they are self-insured.
•
Patients want better access to care at a more reasonable fee.

The Consult Overview
Teladoc’s medical consultations are conducted by licensed,
board certified physicians over the phone or through video
conference. When the patient’s PCP is not available,
Teladoc provides cross coverage by using the patient’s
personal medical history.
• Teladoc consults are for acute, episodic, non-emergent conditions.
They are not intended to replace the PCP, nor are they for the
treatment of long-term chronic illness.
• Although all patients are referred to seek in-person care and provide
their PCPs with copies of their portable health records, Teladoc does
not provide follow-up care at this time.
• In addition, Teladoc prohibits the prescription of any DEA controlled
substances.
