Name:_______________________________________________ Period:___________________ Cat DISSECTION Packet *Your Cat Test covers this packet, which you can use on your test. If you do not complete this packet, you will not do well on your Cat Test. Additionally some portions of it may be taken as a formative grade to ensure that you are working on your packet. SECTION 1: External Anatomy 1. Define the following words and then label the external features of the cat on the diagram. Some of the cat labeling involves the planes shown in the above diagram. Cranial Caudal Dorsal Ventral Lateral Medial Proximal Eyelids Pinnae External Nares Vibrassae 2. Define the following words and make sure you can locate them on your cat specimen. Your cat test may have a picture of a dissected cat for you to identify these or an actual specimen. PinnaeTongueHard PalateSoft PalateIncisorsCaninesPremolarsMolars3. The total number of teeth in the adult cat is 30 and it is 32 in man. The cat’s dental formula is: 3, 1, 3, 1 3, 1, 2, 1 The human dental formula is: 2, 1, 2, 3 2, 1, 2, 3 The numbers are in the following order: incisor, canine, premolar, molar. The top set of numbers refers to the teeth in half of the upper jaw, and the lower set of numbers refers to the teeth in half of the lower jaw. Based on the diet of each, explain the differences in the dental formulas of the cat and the human. 4. Identify whether you cat is male or female. This may also be labeled on your cat bag. Write below. 5. Use the scalpel to draw a line down the cat’s throat. Be careful to not cut too deep, but you will want to expose the esophagus and trachea. 6. What is the function of the trachea? 7. How does its structure (NOT function) compare to the esophagus? 8. What structure keeps food from going down the trachea? SECTION II: Muscles 1. 2. Read through the instructions in the lab manual for beginning the muscle dissection. Skin the cat based on the manual instructions. Try and identify as any muscles as you can from the diagram in your manual compared to your cat. What is the difference between an origin and insertion for a muscle? 3. Name at least six muscles we have identified in class that are also present in your cat. 4. Pull on the triceps brachii. How does the function of this muscle compare in cats and humans? SECTION III: Body Cavity: Digestive 1. 2. Read through the manual for instructions on how to open the body cavity Identify the diaphragm. What is its function? 3. Identify the following in your cat. Label on the diagram that follows. Your cat test may have a picture of a dissected cat for you to identify these or an actual specimen. Gall Bladder Spleen Small Intestine Rectum Liver Mesentery Large Intestine Anus Pancreas Esophagus Bile Duct Stomach 4. Cut open the stomach. What acid would normally be found inside the stomach? 5. Remove the small intestine by cutting though the mesentery. Measure them on the lab table in centimeters. Why do you expect the small intestine to be longer than the large intestine? (Answer on first line) _________________cm- Length of Small Intestine 6. Describe the villi of the small intestine as seen through the dissecting microscope. 7. What is the function of the villi? 8. How many lobes does the liver have? SECTION IV: Thoracic Cavity 1. Read the lab manual for instructions on cutting the thoracic cavity. Identify the Following in your cat. Pericardium 2. Lungs Heart Remove the heart and examine its structure. Write the pathway of blood flow starting from the vena cava and ending with the rest of the body. CIRCLE which parts of the pathway are de-oxygenated. SECTION V: Urogenital System *The Excretory System is the next unit we will cover after the cat which covers more of the below information in depth. 1. Label the following diagram with: kidneys, ureter, urethra, and bladder. Find them inside your cat. 2. Identify the kidneys in your cat. Describe their shape, size, and location. 3. What is the function of the kidneys? 4. By each structure below, label whether it would be found in a male (M) or female (F) cat. Scrotum-___________ Uterus-___________ Clitoris-_________________ Vagina-____________ Epididymus-_______ Testes-__________________ Oviducts-__________ Ductus Deferens-____ Spermatic Cord-__________ Penis-_____________ Prostate Gland-_____ 5. The cat has a bicornate uterus. What does that mean and how is this different from a human uterus? 6. Next to the following descriptions, write the structure that matches (use the words above). You will not use all the words. A) Produces some of the seminal fluid, located where ductus deferens and urethra meet. B) A continuation of the epididymus to the urethra. C) End of the female reproductive tract. D) Where fetus develops. E) Where eggs develop and female hormones are produced. F) Two glands that produce sperm cells along with male sex hormones. G) Tightly coiled tubules on the dorsal surface of each testis. H) Twisted tubes carry egg to the uterus. I) Bundle of vessels containing the ductus deferens, spermatic artery and vein, and a nerve. 7. The clitoris of the female cat is stated to be homologous to the penis of the male cat in your lab manual. What does this mean? SECTION VI: Nervous System 1. Read the lab manual for instructions on how to expose the vertebrae. 2. Does the spinal cord widen or narrow at the caudal and cranial ends? 3. Recall the dorsal and ventral nerve roots we talked about in class. What differences exist between the two are in regards to function? 4. Continue to read the lab manual in order to view the brain. 5. The tough outer membrane (meninge) adheres to the cranium and is called the ____________________ 6. What other two meninges from outermost to innermost can be viewed? SECTION VII: Bones 1. When you have finished all above sections, you will want to try and identify the bones on Figure 2 (p. 4) of your lab manual in your cat. In the box below, you need to sketch Figure 2 (p. 4). You could be required to identify these bones on this diagram on your test.
