This presentation analyzes (1) rippling and humping, (2) pore formation, and (3) spiking, which are especially encountered in melting or welding. Rippling, humping, spiking, and porosity seriously reduce properties of the joint and products after solidification in manufacturing and materials technologies. On the other hand, surface roughness can be used to excite surface plasmon, enhancing efficiency of LED, medical detectors, and solar cells, etc. Porosity can be applied in fabricating functional materials to manipulate mass, momentum and energy transport. In view of their practical and academic importance, we measure, analyze and confirm mechanisms of these phenomena. Controlling of them becomes achievable. Prof. Wei has published more than 80 journal papers, given keynote or invited speeches in international conferences more than 50 times. He is a Fellow of AWS (2007), and a Fellow of ASME (2000). He also received the Outstanding Research Achievement Awards from both the National Science Council (2004), and NSYSU (1991, 2001, 2004), the Outstanding Scholar Research Project Winner Award from National Science Council (2008), the Adams Memorial Membership Award from AWS (2008), the Warren F. Savage Memorial Award from AWS (2012), and the William Irrgang Memorial Award from AWS (2014). He has been the Xi-Wan Chair Professor of NSYSU since 2009, and Invited Distinguished Professor in the Beijing University of Technology, China, during 2015-2017. KEYNOTE SPEECH Keynote Speaker Dr. Ahmed Chemori Centre National De La Recherche Scientifique, France Title: Control of Parallel Robots for Extremely Fast Operations Abstract. Serial robots consist of sequentially connected links forming an open kinematic chain. These robots are characterized by their large workspace and their high dexterity. However, it is known that in order to perform tasks which require high acceleration and high precision; such robots are not recommended because of their lack of stiffness and accuracy. In order to deal with this issue, parallel kinematic manipulators (PKMs) robots are more suitable. The main idea of their mechanical structure consists in using at least two kinematic chains of links to support (the fixed base) the end-effector (travelling plate), each of these chains containing at least one actuator. This allows for a distribution of the load between the chains. PKMs have important advantages in terms of stiffness, speed, accuracy and payload with respect to their serial counterparts. When interested in high speed robotized repetitive applications such as food packaging, the key idea relies in looking for short cycle times. This means obviously to look for a short motion time, as well as a stabilization time as short as possible, while guaranteeing the robustness and performance with respect to disturbances and changes in operational conditions. This talk will give an overview of some control solutions for high-speed applications in PKMs. The proposed solutions are mainly based on adaptive control techniques and have been validated through real-time experiments on different PKM prototypes. KEYNOTE SPEECH Keynote Speaker Dr. Xingjian Jing The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong, China Title: The X-shaped Structure and Applications Dr. Xingjian Jing received the B.S. degree from Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China, in 1998, the M.S. degree and PhD degree in Robotics from Shenyang Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shenyang, China, in 2001 and 2005 respectively. He achieved the PhD degree in nonlinear systems and signal processing from the Department of Automatic Control and Systems Engineering, University of Sheffield, Sheffield, U.K., in 2008. He is now an Associate Professor with the Department of Mechanical Engineering, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) even since July 2015. Before joining in PolyU as an Assistant Professor in Nov 2009, he was a Research Fellow with the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research, University of Southampton, working on biological signal processing. His current research interests include: Bio-inspired systems and approaches; Robotic systems and control; Nonlinear dynamics, vibration, control; Sensor technology; Energy harvesting; Nonlinear fault diagnosis or information processing, etc. Dr Jing is an active reviewer for many known journals and conferences. He currently severs as an Associate Editor of IEEE/ASME Trans. on Mechatronics, an Associate Editor of Mechanical Systems and Signal Processing, and also as editorial board members of several other international journals.
