Supporting English Language Learners The following are suggestions for optional lessons to take with your English language learners. See the overview chart in the Program Guide for a summary of the text features of this book. Purpose Recognizing emotional response to a range of situations and using appropriate vocabulary to describe these responses Introduce the concept and practice Inferring characters’ motivations and feelings helps the student to understand different points of view and to develop their sense of empathy. When the student is familiar with the book, ask them to consider how both the characters felt at different stages in the text. Discuss how each character behaved and infer the reasons for their behaviour. Provide a selection of pictures that demonstrate a variety of emotions. Ask the student to identify how the characters in each picture are feeling and to give a reason why. During the discussion of the pictures, encourage the student to use appropriate vocabulary, and introduce new vocabulary as necessary. Discuss the use of facial expression to show emotion and talk about cultural differences in relation to this. © 2015 Rainbow Reading Programme Ltd.
