RESEARCH ACTIVITY AND PROJECTS
The research activity developed in recent years has focused on several issues associated with the seismic response of
civil and industrial structures and components and with the study of protection systems against earthquakes. In
particular, studies conducted over the past years, which still constitute a large part of ongoing researches, can be
subdivided as follows:
 Performance-based design of steel-concrete composite bridges: This research activity regards the applicability
of a new design philosophy to small-medium span steel-concrete composite: the Performance-based design
approach. In this respect the following European project proposed by a wide international team and coordinated by
writer, has been funded in 2012 by the Research funds on Steel and Coal (RFCS) of the European Commission.
o
SEBQRI Project 2012-2015 (Performance-Based Earthquake Engineering analysis of short-medium span
steel-concrete composite bridges, Grant Agreement: RFCS-CT-2012-00032). SEQBRI project aims at applying
the PBEE methodology to these bridges with S355M/N-S460M/N fine grain steels, to provide the foundation for
a new generation of European seismic codes and to extend EN1998-1 and EN1998-2. The research team,
coordinated by the writer, is an international consortium of 6 partners: University Roma Tre, University of
Trento, University of Aachen (RWTH), Service d'Etudes Techniques des Routes et Autoroutes (Setra),
ArcelorMittal Research and Development Esch, S.Sathopoulos - K. Farros Consulting Engineers S.A. Total
Budget € 1.401.939
 Assessment of the seismic response of existing bridges and applicability of seismic isolation systems: This
activity is subdivided in several sub-themes: 1) definition of protocols for in-situ investigation of the mechanical
characteristics of concrete 2) methods for the seismic assessment of structures, 3) design and execution of
experimental tests (cyclic and pseudodynamic) on old R.C. bridges with portal frame piers, 4) definition of accurate
models to account for degradation phenomena (bond-slip, buckling of steel bars, strain-penetration, flexural-shear
interaction, 5) evaluation of the seismic risk of existing bridges under the action of mainshocks and aftershocks, 6)
applicability of seismic isolation systems. On this subject I have cooperated and coordinated several research
projects. In particular:
o
o
o
Reluis Project 2005-2008 (Rete dei Laboratori di Ingegneria sismica) – Thrust 3 – Existing bridges. One of the
objectives of the project was to evaluate the cyclic behaviour of old bridge piers. For this reason several
imposed displacement tests were conducted in the laboratory of the Department of Structures of University
Roma Tre in order to study the cyclic behaviour of R.C. frame piers with plain steel bars and to calibrate a
reliable non-linear model able to accurately describe its behaviour. The team, coordinated by prof. P.E. Pinto
was composed by 7 units (Torino, Pavia, Genova, Chieti, Roma la Sapienza, Roma Tre, Cosenza). The writer
was member of the Roma Tre unit. Budget € 120.000
Transnational Access project RETRO’ 2010-2012 (SERIES Transnational Access User Agreement N°
31724), funded within the European projet SERIES (7° Framework) for the execution of pseudodynamic tests
on an old R.C viaduct with frame piers, whose execution is planned for the end of 2012 in the European
Laboratory for the Seismic Assessment of strucrures. The project, coordinated by the writer, includes an
International team of researchers coming from Politecnico di Torino (prof. R. Ceravolo), University of Patras –
Greece (prof. N. Makris), University of Bogazici – Turkey (prof. M. Erdik), Università del Sannio (prof. L. Di
Sarno), Alga Spa Milan (Dr. A. Marioni).
PRIN 2007-2009 Fragility curves of damaged bridges. The research aims at providing a tool, suitable in "real
time" as well, which allows to undertake rational and objective decisions about the transitability of seismically
damaged viaducts .The evaluation criteria is based on the risk that an aftershock occurs after a mainshock,
causing the exceeding of the maximum strength of the damaged bridge. The writer was member of the Roma
Tre unit. Budget € 63.000.
 Seismic risk of major-hazard industrial plants and applicability of innovative protection systems (base
isolation and energy dissipation). The main goal of this activity is the study of the seismic behaviour of industrial
components installed in chemical and petrochemical plants, particularly vulnerable to earthquakes. A second goal of
this research is the study of the applicability of passive control systems for the seismic protection of industrial
structures. From 2004 to now several research projects have been funded to which the writer has provided important
contributions on the theme of seismic response of tanks and piping systems.
o European Project Induse-2-Safety (component fragility evaluation and seismic safety assessment of "special
risk petrochemical plants under design basis and beyond design basis accidents, Grant No: RFS-PR-13056) –
Coordinated by Prof. Oreste S. Bursi of the University of Trento. INDUSE-2-SAFETY aims at developing a
quantitative risk assessment methodology for seismic loss prevention of “special risk” petrochemical plants and
components, e.g., support structures, piping systems, tanks and pressure vessels, flange and tee joints, etc.
The proposed probabilistic based methodology will ensure safe functioning/shutdown under ground motions of
increasing spectral acceleration through extensive analytical, FE and experimental investigations. Related
harmonized importance factors γI and limit state probabilities will provide a uniform hazard versus a uniform risk
basis for EN 1990/EN 1998.
o European Project INDUSE (Structural safety of industrial steel tanks, pressure vessels and piping systems
under seismic loading – 7° Framework) – coordinated by prof. Spyros Karamanos of the University of Thessaly
(Greece). The activity of the writer concerns the assessment of seismic behaviour of piping systems by
numerical and experimental activities in collaboration with Prof. Oreste Bursi of the University of Trento (Italy).
To develop these activities the University of Trento has assigned to the writer two research grants (2010, 2011).
o Reluis Project Thrust 2 – Special Systems (2010-2012). The project, devoted to the seismic analysis of
special systems, includes a task coordinated by the Unit Roma Tre, which has the ambitious objective to write
guidelines for the design and the assessment of the most common industrial components (tanks, furnaces,
piping systems, service frames, etc..) and to individuate their criticisms. Experimental test will be also conducted
on flanged joints of piping systems. Budget € 50.000.
o Study of isolation systems for the seismic protection of Major-Hazard industrial plants and components
placed on high seismic hazard zones. Analysis of base isolation systems for the seismic protection of tanks,
design and execution of shaking-table tests on a reduced scale steel storage tank. The activities carried out
during 2004-2006 have been funded by ISPEL-DIPIA. The experimental tests has been performed at the
Laboratory of the Research Center ENEA/Casaccia at Rome. Budget € 200.000
 Other activities developed within National and International research programs. In addition to the activities
detailed above, some other interesting activities regarding passive and semi-active control of structures have been
developed by the writer.
o European Project SPACE (Semi-active and Passive Control of the Dynamic Behaviour of Structures
subjected to Earthquake, Wind and Vibrations). Study of the cyclic behaviour of Magneto-Rheological
dampers for the semi-active control of structures: Experimental activity on a prototype of Magneto-Rheological
Dampers carried out at the laboratories of ISMES (Bergamo, Italy) and Thales Underwater Systems (TALES,
Sophia Antipolis, France) – European Project SPACE, Coordinator: Dr. R. Medeot. The writer was a member of
the research unit Roma Tre, coordinated by prof G. Serino.
o VIA Project - Reduction of Seismic vulnerability of Infrastractural System and Phisical Enviroment,
National Coordinator: Prof. M.Calvi, Funded by INGV. The activity regards the evaluation of the seismic
behaviour of high-voltage electrical equipment and design of a passive control system for its seismic protection.
In particular, Experimental activity on electrical equipment, Fragility analysis of electrical apparatuses,
evaluation of the seismic vulnerability of electric substations, proposal of a new base isolation system based on
steel cable dampers. The writer was a member of the research unit Roma Tre, coordinated by Prof. R. Giannini.
