I have thought about what I can do when I go out at night. KEY VOCABULARY Dark, darkness, night-time, twilight, dusk, safety, safely, frightened, light, bright, awareness. RESOURCES/SUPPORT “The Owl who was Afraid of the Dark” by Jill Tomlinson (excerpts) Owl puppet Torch Candles Matches Lamp Reflector strips and high visibility jackets and a selection of coats/boots/hats etc. www.think!education.com provides free posters entitled “Be Bright! Be see in the country/be seen in the town” Fluorescent or day-glo paper/ black paper/owl outline/glue/scissors TEACHING/LEARNING ACTIVITIES Introduction Reflect on previous sessions about personal safety before introducing the owl puppet and excerpts from The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark. Discuss why Plop (the baby barn owl) was afraid. Ask if anyone is afraid to go out at night and why? Ask whether anyone goes out at night and what they have noticed. Introduce the phrase “Be Bright (or Brilliant)” and use the idea of armour to help protect us when we are in a dark place. Look at all the sources of light that you have. Ask the children to think of words to describe the light, such as bright/ safe/ warm/ welcoming/ comfortable… Tell the children that we are going to find out how to keep that feeling when we are outside in the dark. Autumn 2 KS1 Yr2/B Lesson 3 MAIN TEACHING AND LEARNING Activity 1 – Whole Class As a class look at the coats and boots etc. Without lights would you be seen in those clothes? What would make it safer? Introduce the bright high visibility jacket and reflector strips. Compare the two. What do you notice? £££ Can we find out how much they each cost and which is the best? Use the torch to shine on the two sets, which one shows up best? Tell the children that drivers need to be able to see more clearly when the light is low and that we can put our ‘armour’ on to help them. Look at the Think! Education posters and talk about what they can see. How are the children in the poster helping the driver? Activity 2 - Individually Use the owl outline (on black paper). Ask the children to make the owl a coat/ hat/ band from the fluorescent paper that will help him to feel safe in the dark. When they are complete, use the torch to shine on them and watch the result. Do they show up more clearly? Remind the children to ‘put their armour’ on when they go out on a dark night. Remember to “Be Brilliant! DIFFERENTIATION Some children may require support when using the glue and scissors. PLENARY Talk with the group about what they have learned. Make a list of what we can do to be safe during dark nights and add it to the Be Safe display. Talk about always telling a trusted adult where you are going if you go out, and to walk in a brightly lit area if you go anywhere. A reminder about stranger danger may also be appropriate at this point. KEY QUESTIONS 1. 2. 3. 4. How do I keep safe? Whose responsibility is my safety? What should I wear on a dark night? How will a driver see me? £££ Are there any free visibility aids (stickers etc.) we can source for the class? e.g. contact local Road Safety Team Autumn 2 KS1 Yr2/B Lesson 3 ASSESSMENT FOR LEARNING Talk with the children about Plop (the barn owl).
