Teacher Resource Perform a Safe Entry: Slide In Why Teach: A ‘Slide In’ entry is a safe entry. It is chosen when: The depth is unknown. The state of the bottom is unknown. Aim: Experience a ‘Slide In’ entry. Understand that if the depth is unknown it is a safer option. Understand the importance of checking the water before entering. Discuss with students/parents/teachers: Knowing the aquatic environment they are entering. Checking depths. Entering slowly. Preparation: 1. Gather a variety of equipment suitable for depth estimation. 2. Divide the class in ‘buddy pairs’. 3. Select an appropriate area to teach – depth, stable edge. 4. Decide if students will be entering shallow water only or if they will extend to entering deep water. Procedure: 1. Use equipment to estimate and demonstrate depth of water. 2. Teacher demonstrates ‘Slide In’ entry. 3. Students practice ‘Slide In’ entry in shallow water, alternating with their buddy. 4. If appropriate, students are extended and perform a ‘Slide In’ entry in deep water and/or an unstable entry point (modified by teaching staff). Teaching Points: Sit on pool deck, feet in water. Feel with feet for any submerged obstacles. Twist to one side and place both hands on pool deck. Hold onto pool deck while rolling onto tummy. Wriggle into water backwards. Reach for pool floor with feet, hold onto pool edge throughout. FALLS INTO WATER REMAIN THE HIGHEST CAUSE OF DROWNING IN CHILDREN UNDER FIVE 2012/13
