Light makes the difference
With nicemood LufthansaTechnikandSCHOTTareintroducinganew aircraft interior
cabin lighting system. A development based on the HelioJet LED lighting system, nicemood
provides lasting and homogeneous colors in the cabin.
T
he lighting in an aircraft cabin has a
substantial influence on the passengers’ well-being. The right light can
enhance the passenger comfort and makes
the aircraft cabin a nicer place to be. In
addition, a special lighting atmosphere
distinguishes airlines from their competitors
and makes them unique. The approved
nicemood lighting system, which was presented at Aircraft Interiors Expo 2013 in
Hamburg, Germany, offers an even light
distribution over the complete cabin with
an unlimited color spectrum, controlled
by as little as a smartphone or touchscreen
panel user interface.
Current LED cabin light products can
provide colored cabins, but do not address
the aging process of LEDs that lead to an
unevenlightninginthecabin.Overthetime,
the overall impression of the cabin can be
blurred due to the drifting color. nicemood
addresses this challenge with sensor technology and a variable mixture of lights from
different diodes. In that way, even with the
unavoidable LED color drift, the calibration
will always follow the required color value.
The result is an unmatched even light and
color distribution in the aircraft cabin.
The nicemood system consists of only
four different components: A smartphone
or touchscreen panel as steering unit,
Lufthansa Technik’s wireless access point
and interface unit and the light source
HelioJetTCS(truecolourstabilization).
HelioJet TCS uses the same technology as
HelioJet pure white, which was launched
byLufthansaTechnikandSCHOTTlast
year. The HelioJet lighting system utilizes
LEDs, optical light converters, and fiber

strips, which work with multiple LEDs in a
row, HelioJet relies on just two LEDs per 20
cm that guide their light into an optical light
converter, eliminating the typical LED “spots”.
nicemood is available both in classic
white and an individually controllable fullcolorspectrum(includingwhite).Common
color LED lights today feature individual red,
green and blue LEDs that are only mixed
properly if some distance is kept between
the emitting LED and the surface it illuminates. In the HelioJet TCS light fixtures high
power color LEDs are perfectly mixed within
the optical light converter. Therefore no individual red, green or blue light spots are perceivable and the color mix is homogenously
emitted also against close surfaces.
LED cabin lighting redefined
The simple device setup makes the nicemood system suitable for any aircraft size,
from the smallest Learjet business jet type to
the largest Boeing or Airbus model, whether
it sincommercialorVIPuse.Thenicemood
system offers an extremely high mean time
betweenfailure(MTBF)duetocolorhomogeneity throughout the complete cabin independent of the number of light fixtures and
the active color calibration. With nicemood,
travelers or cabin crews have full control of
the cabin lights from any wireless smartphoneinVIPaircraftortouchscreendisplays
in commercial aircraft. Every single light fixture can be regulated individually. The variations of control are only limited by imagination – the possibilities range from timed light
scenes, special effects to custom color
branding. With its homogenous and individual cabin lighting nicemood facilitates passenger comfort while travelling.

Media Trolley
48 Tablets in one go
Lufthansa Technik has unveiled the
“Media Trolley”, an integrated solution
for the storage and charging of Tablet
PCs. Up to 48 of the online devices can
be kept together, distributed easily on
board and recharged again after use.
Handled just like a standard catering
trolley, the new Media Trolley is
equipped with a fire protection system
and fire extinguishing equipment. The
system is also available in a half-size
trolley format, with space and services

For all Lufthansa widebodies
Lufthansa Technik’s niceview™ moving map system is proving highly
successful. Following the installation on its flagship Airbus A380s and
Boeing 747-8s, Lufthansa has decided to use the system on all its
long-range types in the future. Developed by the innovation experts of
Lufthansa Technik, the niceview™ moving map system offers high-resolution 3-D maps as well as virtual flights. Integration of the latest flight
simulation technology and authentic satellite maps make it possible to
offer different photorealistic 2-D
and 3-D views for infotainment
applications in real time, with
resolutions of up to one meter
(threefeet)perpixel.Thesystem
can easily be installed in the
frame of virtually any maintenance
check, eliminating any loss of

nice® HD
Have a nice flight!
Lufthansa Technik’s newest HD-capable networked integrated cabin management Ethernet system is called “nice® HD”. The cabin management and
in-flight entertainment distribution system for data and content enables passengers to control their environment, watch movies, listen to music, and
interface to other aircraft systems. nice® HD includes both wired and wireless
standard interfaces to control the cabin environment and push/pull content
to embedded displays or personal devices. The IFE component of the system
includesabuilt-inDigitalRightsManagement (DRM) framework which allows
licensed protected content to be legally
distributed and played-back. Innovation
has also created a universal web-app to
provide wireless system control and content management via a Graphical User
Interface displayed on a personal device
