Our first show of the 2016 show season is in
the books! Last weekend, seven exhibitors
from our clubs came together at the Saline
County Fairgrounds for the Livestock Show.
Projects included beef cattle, dairy cattle,
goats, and sheep. There were a total of 6 exhibitors and 16 animals this year, which is up
from 10 animals in 2015! The show was a success, and I am very proud of the hard work of
each of our livestock exhibitors. Check out
the show pictures inside. Looking ahead, the
General show is coming up in less than a
month! Make sure you are working on those
projects and be ready for some amazing project
exhibitions this year! And now on to the rest
of the story...

F1163 (or above) certified equestrian helmet whenever mounted or driving at all
4-H horse and pony events, shows, activities, or practices. Original tags must be
present in all approved helmets. The 4-H member is responsible to see that this
specified headgear is properly fitted with the approved harness fastened snugly
in place whenever mounted. Helmet policies apply to all county, area, and state
4-H horse and pony events, shows, and activities. Protective helmets are recommended for all riders and drivers at all times. It is recommended that all adults
working with 4-H members model the desired youth behavior by also wearing
protective helmets whenever mounted or driving.

4-H members showing swine will exhibit at the Massac County
Fair this year. Vickie Taylor, University of Illinois Extension Program Coordinator for Massac County 4-H has invited our members
to join them at their show. This is a great opportunity to meet
members from outside of our clubs and should be more convenient
for those members who will be showing at the Jr. Swine Show at
Massac Co. Fair as well.
Online ethics certification required for everyone taking 4-H animal
projects
All 4-H members enrolled in an animal project area are required to
complete the online Quality Assurance and Ethics course one time in
order to stay enrolled in an animal project area.
The certification must be done if you are enrolled in one of the follow
ing projects: beef, dairy, cats, dogs, goats, horses, poultry, rabbits,
sheep, and swine. Members who don’t complete the certification be
fore the show will be removed from the project and not be allowed to
show. Anyone who has already taken the certification does not need to
retake the test. The local office has a list of those already certified. The
website is located online at: http://web.extension.illinois.edu/qaec/ .
This rule applies to 4-H members who exhibit live animals AND poster exhibits.
*Here is the most current list of those who will need to complete
their QAEC: Elizabeth Morse, Summer Smith. If you have completed
the QAEC but your name is still on this list, please let me know ASAP.
Please remember that you will not be allowed to exhibit an animal
project unless this training has been completed!
Understanding 4-H premiums
In the past, the Illinois Department of Ag has provided
funds to local Illinois 4-H members in the forms of pre
miums (cash prizes) for participation in 4-H shows and
exhibitions. Because Illinois is operating without a
budget, the IDOA was not allowed to pay out those premiums from the
2015 show season. We currently have no guarantee that those funds from
last year, or any funds for the 2016 shows, will be provided. We treasure
each of our 4-H families and know that you make a financial investment in
your 4-H project work. We hope you continue to take pride in your 4-H
learning and continue to participate fully in the 4-H program. As you are
aware, we have no control on the actions of Illinois government. We will
continue to look for ways to recognize the outstanding achievements of our
4-H members.

Time is almost up to enter Illinois State Treasurer Michael
Frerichs 4th annual Cream of the Crop Photo Contest. Enter

4-H 24/7 and 365
The new 4-H Year begins on October 1, and with it comes a
great new way to join 4-H. All 4-H families will be able to enroll and pick
their projects ONLINE 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
Wherever you are, 4-H goes with you. Look for more information in the
2016-17 ILLINOIS CLOVER.
Test your skills at state livestock judging contest
The Illinois 4-H Livestock Judging Contest will be held Monday, June 20 at the Stock Pavilion
in Urbana (1402 West Pennsylvania Ave.) beginning with registration at 8:30 a.m. All partici
pants must be checked in by 9:30. The contest will begin at 10. Each county may enter a to
tal of three teams, with no more than two junior teams or two senior teams.
NEW THIS YEAR: Individuals may enter separately, and there is no limit to the number of
individuals from each county. There are other changes this year.
Juniors may not compete in the senior division. Juniors are youth who were not yet 14
on January 1, 2016.
There is a $10 entry fee for each senior participant (age 14 and above) to cover the cost
of noon lunch.
REMEMBER. The only parking available is metered street parking. You will need to pay me
ters throughout the day. Campus police will give tickets, unfortunately. ALSO REMEMBER: It
is often VERY warm and humid. Please bring water with you.
County teams are made up of four people, and the top three scores will be combined for
the final team score. Any 4-H member that has completed a year of college should be en
tered as an extra individual and not part of a team. College student may not have under
gone training for post-secondary livestock judging. Any 4 H member who has competed at
the American Royal 4-H Livestock Judging Contest as a member of the county team repre
senting Illinois must participate as an extra individual in the June contest and not as a part
of a team.
There will be three classes of beef, three classes of swine and two classes of sheep. There
may also be a class of meat goats substituted for one class of the other species. There will
be a class of 15 questions (5 from a beef class, 5 from a swine class and 5 from a sheep
class).
Has your 4-H project changed your life? Does 4-H let you do something you really love? Is
your 4-H project something you want to do for a career? We’d like to tell your story in the
2016-17 issue of THE CLOVER. This is what we need from you: Send the following to Judy

State fair age change means all 4-H members are eligible
Illinois 4-H and the Illinois State Fair Junior Livestock Department have revised the exhibi
tion age so that all 4-H members (youth who were 8 to 18 years of age as of Sept. 1, 2015)
can exhibit at the state fair this summer. The Junior Livestock Department has extended its
age to 21. Since 4-H age ends at 18, the only way to exhibit at the state fair junior livestock
show if you are 19 to 21 is to be an active FFA members as verified by Illinois FFA and in ac
cordance with one of the following program options:

Maintain active membership on the roster of their local high school FFA Chapter;

Maintain active membership in a collegiate FFA Chapter in a post-secondary institution
of higher education in the State of Illinois; or

Maintain active membership in an Illinois FFA Alumni Chapter.
Save your pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, and dollars
The Illinois 4-H Foundation will be holding a fun fundraiser for everyone attending the Illi
nois State Fair. Members and clubs can make a real difference in the 4-H program. Last year,
the Foundation GAVE BACK more than $394,000 dollars to local 4-H clubs, members and
county/state programs. Let’s do our part in giving back to the Foundation. Bring your dona
tions to the Illinois 4-H Foundation Booth in the Orr Building during 4-H Exhibit Days of
Aug. 13 & 14 and Aug. 20 & 21. Together We Can!
Your day at the Illinois State Fair
If you are selected as our county’s representative at the state fair, here’s what you need to
know:
The county office will mail you more information after our local show, as well as an ex
hibit tag for your project. Remove all the tags and ribbons from our local show.
Our counties exhibits on Saturday, August 13th.
4-H members should plan to arrive in Springfield at the fairgrounds between 8 and 9:30
a.m. Traffic can be very busy, so give yourself plenty of time.
Once on the fairgrounds, make your way the far west side of the fairgrounds…. At the
Orr Building.
4-H members will drop their projects off at the table for their project area between 8
and 9:30 a.m. Then, check the master schedule to see what time YOUR conference
judging begins. Everyone will have at least a 10-minute judging time to discuss your
project with a judge. Return to your judging area about 10 minutes before your
scheduled time. Your project will remain on display until 3:30 that day. Be sure to
come back and pick it up before 4:30 closing time.
If you are registered in Fashion Revue, you don’t need to arrive until 12:30 p.m. Be
dressed and stage-ready by 1:30. The fashion review begins at 2 p.m.
Come back for the 4-H Clover Celebration at 3 p.m.
No projects may be removed from the judging area until 3:30 p.m. It’s the rule, so follow it!
There will be lots of other fun things to do in the Orr Building.
4-H website answers your state fair questions!
Get ready to enjoy everything that makes you smile at this year's Illinois State Fair ... food,
music, entertainment, animals, and 4-H blue-ribbon exhibits. 4-H returns to the Orr Build
ing, right next to all the activity at the junior livestock barns. Make sure you have the latest
information by visiting our website @ go.illinois.edu/4Hstatefair. Complete schedules, ex
hibit guidelines, maps, and more!
Will you help us at state fair?
Each day we’ll need about 75 volunteers to help with the state fair general project judging.
Judge’s assistants help monitor project exhibits, call up exhibitors for judging, apply ribbons
to exhibits and record official grades. There are two different shifts we need workers … 7:30
AM to 12:30 PM and Noon to 5 PM. Pick one or both shifts to help! If you want to help, email
Brett Santo, Illinois 4-H Events Manager @ [email protected]. We need volunteers Aug. 13,
14, 20 & 21.
Illinois 4-H Foundation Celebration Event
The Illinois 4-H Foundation will honor outstanding volunteers at a gathering Saturday, Aug.
20 in the Orr Building of the Illinois State Fair in Springfield. Each county 4-H program was
allowed to submit the name of a volunteer who has made tremendous contributions to the
local 4-H program to receive the Hall of Fame Award. More details about the award ceremo
ny will be coming soon. It will happen in late afternoon after the 4-H exhibit judging con
cludes for the day.
Parking at Illinois State Fair
The Illinois State Fair has revised its policy on discounted parking passes for Illinois 4-H. This year, county
Extension offices are only allowed to purchase discounted tickets for the days of the 4-H General Project
Exhibit Shows, which are Aug. 13, 14, 20 & 21. Discounted passes are ONLY available to 4-H exhibitors &
their family, and not to the general public. We will only have gate pass options for Gate 8/Lot 1 and Gate
6/Lot 18 parking. Junior Show Livestock exhibitors are required to purchase their parking and entry tick
ets directly through the state fair. Please understand this is a State Fair rule and outside the control of
Illinois 4-H or your local 4-H office.
Here are the discounted rates (Aug. 13, 14, 20, & 21):
Car Gate Parking $5/car. (Regular weekend parking is $10/car; Weekday parking is $5)
Individual Admission (12 and under free)
Individual Admission (13 and older) $5
We highly discourage anyone from purchasing Lot 1 tickets the first weekend. With livestock shows,
that lot will fill up by 7:30 AM. Lot 1 will be fine for the second weekend of judging and for the Illinois 4-H
Foundation event.
THERE’S GOOD NEWS: State Fair is providing Load/Unload passes to 4-H families which will allow cars to
enter through Gate 8 (or other gate if that is closed) and drive to the Orr Building to drop off exhibits or
people. You will need to present your admission tickets for anyone in the car upon entering the fair
grounds; then the driver will need to leave through Gate 9 immediately after drop off, GET THEIR HAND
STAMPED FOR READMISSION to the fair, and then re-enter the fairgrounds through the gate for which
they have a parking pass.
*Payment for parking passes is due upon ordering. Payments can be made at either the
Pope-Hardin, or the Saline County office.
