The Safety Director recommends you take three actions to better protect workers from chemical
hazards:
1- Survey your workplace and make sure chemical containers have legible labels that clearly identify the
contents, hazards, and warnings.
2- Store chemical containers that are not being used in proper cabinets and discard old and unnecessary
chemicals. Discarding unwanted chemicals has several benefits; old chemicals can degrade and become
unstable, there are less chemicals that can interact in the event of an emergency, and your chemical
inventory is easier to manage.
3- Select the proper level of training workers need to fully protect themselves from the chemical hazards
they face. The MSI offers two levels of training, Hazard Communication with GHS which is for workers
who would only be expected to be exposed to chemicals in their workplace and HazMat Awareness with
GHS which is for workers who may also come in contact with chemicals outside their workplace such as
working where illegal dumping can occur or if the worker may be called to assist at a chemical release
emergency.
