BDI and Dodge Partner to Save Wastewater Plant

The Problem:
A 27-year-old wastewater treatment plant located in the Northeast
was having problems with reducers that power the Rotating Biological
Contactors in its filtration process. Chronic leakage and premature
gearbox failure were among issues occurring in the plant’s harsh operating
environment. The media rotates at 1-2 rpm to facilitate growth of biological
organisms (slime) via the air/effluent exchange.This growth results in an
unbalance mass on the contactor, which stresses the gearbox.
While originally commissioned with Dodge reducers, the plant had switched
at some point to a lower-cost alternative. The drives were failing in less
than five years, many lasting only two years, despite revisions in the plant
process to lessen the uneven loads.
The Solution:
After dealing with chronic seal leaks, gearbox failures and overall
decreased performance, the plant was happy to give Dodge another try
at BDI’s suggestion. New Dodge RBC 188D Biodisc Drives have been
installed as the inferior units failed.
Designed specifically for the wastewater industry, the Dodge units have a
twin power path with two gears/pinions to transfer the load, thus creating
enhanced load-carrying capability. Internal stress on the housing and
bearings is reduced, resulting in longer bearing life.
