POLICY ON PLAYER SELECTION OBJECTIVE To ensure that all players are placed within a team that is most appropriate to their age, skill level and stage of development. This policy is applicable to players in the junior competition. RESPONSIBILITY Team coaches Head coach per gender age grade (juniors) Coaching Director Club Committee Executive Club Committee PROCESS/PRINCIPLES The initial team selection process will commence at trials that are convened prior to the commencement of the summer season. Further player evaluation may be required both prior to the commencement of the season and on-going. The coaches that are involved in the selection process may be a combination of those who will be coaching the group in the coming season and those that have previously coached players within the group to bring a combination of experience and objectivity. The coaching director and other senior coaches that the director may designate can also be involved. The selection into teams shall be overseen by the head coach per gender age group. This is the coach designated by the coaching director as the coach of the highest team within that group. Where possible the aim shall be to have no more than 8 players per team If there is more than one team per gender age grade there shall be one team that is designated and established as the highest, with team(s) below that being considered as developmental teams. If there are multiple teams these may be of equal ability or graded in skills depending upon the level of competition and number of divisions available within that grade. This shall be a joint decision by the coaches involved Junior players will normally be placed within a team that is matched to their age. Only exceptional circumstances can see this varied, with relevant coaches and the coaching director collectively making the decision. The club executive is to be advised of any such decision. Policy on Player Selection Issue Date 2/9/12 Review Date 2/9/15 The selection into teams will take a number of factors into account that will collectively inform the decision. The aim is to ensure that all players are an appropriate “fit” into their respective teams. The factors considered include, in no particular order of importance: Player skills Player position and the needs of the relevant teams (i.e. forwards vs. guards) Player commitment to the club and trainings Full year vs. single season involvement No particular factor(s) will necessarily override any other(s) Initial team or squad selection shall be made available on the club website as soon as practical following pre-season trials day During the season players shall only be shifted between teams as permitted in the bye-laws and only by way of a discussion between the player involved, the parents (if a junior player) and the coaches of the two teams. The coaching director may be involved in cases where there is not clear agreement and acceptance by all involved. The coaches involved in this process shall have a degree of discretion on how this is implemented when the players involved are in the under 18 competition or above. The Club reserves the right to not allocate a player to a team based upon that player’s financial debt to the club. Any problems or dispute arising out to allocation to a team shall be resolved by way of the process detailed in the Policy on Issue Resolution, accessible on the club’s website.
