Application Instructions
Penofin 1st Step Prep for exterior hardwood is formulated to open the pores of
the wood’s surface. 1st Step Prep is the ideal way to ensure deep penetration
of Penofin’s amazing natural oil finish formulated for hardwood. 1st Step Prep
cleans, brightens, and reduces the hard mill glaze found on most hardwoods.
This allows Penofin to penetrate deeply into the dense wood species for
ultimate protection and beauty.
Surface Preparation
Sweep the surface with a stiff broom or use a blower to clear area of debris. 1st Step Prep is most effective at temperatures where
wood is not hot to the touch. Protect bordering metal surfaces. Dampen surrounding vegetation with water.
Application
Pour two cups of 1st Step Prep into on gallon of clean water and mix. Wet the surface with a garden hose and sprayer. Using a
plastic pump up garden sprayer, apply the solution liberally. Wait 15 minutes and let it do the work for you. DO NOT ALLOW
THE SOLUTION TO DRY ON THE SURFACE, lightly mist if necessary to keep a wet surface. Scrub with a stiff brush and rinse
thoroughly with water.
ALWAYS WEAR RUBBER GLOVES, EYE PROTECTION, AND SOLID SHOES WHEN APPLYING. SURFACE WILL BE
SLIPPERY. DO NOT INHALE POWDER. DO NOT MIX IN A METAL CONTAINER. DO NOT SORE DILUTED SOLUTION.
DO NOT MIX WITH CHLORINE BLEACH OR OTHER CHEMICALS. HARMFUL OR FATAL IF SWALLOWED. CAN CAUSE
EYE AND SKIN BURNS.
Average gallon coverage
300-400 square feet depending on surface type. This container makes approximately 2 gallons of solution.
Cleanup and Storage
• Thoroughly rinse all equipment with water
• Store any unused Penofin 1st Step Prep in its original container in a dry place
• Do not transfer to a metal container as it will cause a chemical reaction
• Protect from freezing
• For disposal of unused product and empty containers, contact your local household refuse collection service
Limited Warranty
Penofin 1st Step Prep is warranted to perform when applied according to label instructions. If Penofin 1st Step Prep is shown to be
defective, Performance Coatings Inc. will replace the product. Performance Coatings Inc.’s liability under any warranty, whether
expressed or implied, is limited solely to the replacement of product and does not include labor or consequential damages.

CONTAINS OXALIC ACID! HARMFUL IF SWALLOWED! Avoid contact with skin, eyes, and mucous membranes. Cover exposed skin during application. Avoid
breathing of vapors and mist. Wear eye protection, rubber gloves, and protective clothing. Do not mix this product with acids; toxic gases may be formed. Don not reuse
empty containers. Avoid contact with metal. USE WITH ADEQUATE VENTILATION. A NIOSH/MSHA approved respirator may be used for additional protection
FIRST AID: This product will irritate eyes and skin. Do not take internally.
EYE CONTACT: Flush immediately with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. Seek immediate medical attention for further evaluation.
SKIN EXPOSURE: Wash exposed area with plenty of soap and water. Repeat washing. Remove contaminated clothing and wash thoroughly before reuse. If irritation
persists, consult a health care professional.
INGESTION: DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING Immediately ingest large amounts of water or milk. Seek medical attention immediately.
KEEP OUT OF THE REACH OF CHILDREN. DO NOT TAKE INTERNALLY.
NOTE: This product is lead free. WARNING! If you scrape, sand or remove old paint, you may release lead dust. LEAD IS TOXIC. EXPOSURE TO LEAD DUST
CAN CAUSE SERIOUS ILLNESS, SUCH AS BRAIN DAMAGE, ESPECIALLY IN CHILDREN. PREGNANT WOMEN SHOULD AVOID EXPOSURE. Wear a
NIOSH-approved respirator to control lead exposure. Clean up carefully with a HEPA vacuum and a wet mop. Before you start, find out how to protect yourself and
