PREPARATION FOR GENERAL STAFF MANAGERS
PROGRAMME
WELCOME TO YOUR ONLINE CAREER INTERVIEW
This module gives you the opportunity to reflect on your career and personal goals and to respond
to a number of questions and prompts. Simply enter you personal responses in the spaces provided.
When you have completed this process, you will be able to print out the resulting document. You
will then be able to discuss it with your supervisor or mentor either at your annual review or at a
mutually suitable time.
You will also have the opportunity of discussing it with a member of the University Staff Planning
Committee (USPC), which co-ordinates the Programme, with a view to indicating your willingness
to take on different work, secondments, or be considered for a promotion.
So let’s begin.
You will need to be able to concentrate and reflect without interruption. You may wish to do a first
draft and then come back to this draft with amendments after a few days. The spaces below each
question will expand to accommodate your answers, which can be of any length you choose.
When you have completed your ‘interview’, you will be able to save the document to your own
directory on your client PC and then retrieve it at your convenience. This will ensure privacy and
confidentiality for the document.

COMPETENCY SELF ANALYSIS TOOL
FOR INDIVIDUALS AND MANAGERS
This self analysis tool has been designed to help facilitate Career Development discussions. The
purpose of this analysis tool is to assist individuals and their manager to determine to what extent
individuals currently meet the competencies listed, how developed they should be in these
competencies for their current role and how developed they need to be in the future for their
current and/or future roles. This will enable managers and individuals to identify required
development needs.
There are four steps to using this tool. Using the rating scale below
1. Rate yourself on the extent to which you meet each of the competencies listed.
2. Rate how developed you need to be in each of these competencies for your current
role to meet the Strategic and Operational objectives of your unit.
3. Rate how developed you will need to be in these competencies in the future
considering the Strategic direction of your unit and your career aspirations.
4. During your Career Development Scheme meeting discuss your ratings with your
