Topic: Renewable Energy (Wind Power) – Visit to Watchtree Nature
Learning Objectives (to share with students):



To understand the differences between renewable and non-renewable energy sources and be
able to give examples of each.
To understand how wind can be used as an energy source.
To know the advantages and disadvantages of wind power as an energy source.
Resources: Provided by school: Pens / pencils. Students should bring outdoor clothing giving consideration to
weather conditions.
Provided by Watchtree Nature Reserve: Lesson plan, risk assessment, ‘flying kites at wnr’ worksheet, ‘predictions
about my kite’ worksheet, ‘material and shape’ cards, risk assessment, kite making materials, scissors.
Learning Outcomes:
Differentiation:
We will: Learn how wind power
works as an energy source.
Through: Working in groups to
design and make our own kites.
In order to: Fly the kites to discover
what shapes work best and further
our understanding on wind power.

Lesson Plan Number: 1
Art and Design: Design and make kites paying specific attention to shape and material.
Science: Using physical activity to aid in the understanding of how wind power is used as a renewable energy source.
Introduction: Explain the day’s tasks and any relevant health and safety. Then divide
the class into groups and get one person from each of the groups to pick a shape and
material card out of a bag.
Starter: Each child should fill in the ‘Predictions about My Kite’ worksheet.
Development of lesson: (Learning Activities)
Students: All will: Work as part of a team to design and create a kite. Have a go at
seeing if the kite will fly.
Most will: Work as part of a team to design and create a kite. Have a go at seeing if it will
fly. Provide evidence of basic understanding as to why it did or did not fly.
Some will: Work as part of a team to design and create a kite. Have a go at seeing if it
will fly. Provide evidence of an understanding as to why it did or did not fly and how
wind power can be harnessed as a renewable form of energy.
Teacher will ensure all learners are making better than expected progress by having pace in the
lesson and constantly checking that students are working at an appropriate level.
Students will work in groups to make their own kites. They should use the material they picked
during the introduction for the main part of the kite and base their design on the shape they
selected. They should create a design which they think will make the kite fly the best. They will
then go outside and each child will have a go at flying their kites. If it is not a windy day then the
kites will not fly but this will be covered in the plenary.
If a student requires help they will be encouraged to ask a peer before approaching the teacher.
This will improve confidence.
