Physical Education EARTH-BALL or ASTEROIDS (Pic. #1) Sideline Center line Starting Line Area: Starting Line Elementary Gymnasium Grade Levels: K, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th Standards: A:3 B:1 C:1 D:1,2,3,4 E:3 F:1,2,5 G:2 Benchmarks: K, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th Duration: 30 minutes for each lesson Goals: The students will work on overhand and underhand throw for accuracy. The students will learn that cooperation and teamwork leads to success. Skills: The activity involves of skills such as running; moving; throwing; teamwork. Students will use proper communication and social skills, while cooperating with other players using team work. Description: The earth-ball game is a ball throwing activity. Divide the class in half and position them at opposite ends of the gym. Have the teams sit in their starting positions (Pic. #1) on the starting line. This game can be played with one or two large balls, in the center. Players are to throw the small balls at the large earth-ball and drive it to the other team’s wall to score a point. This activity can accommodate 12-30 students. Have the first student Equipment: All players will start with a Gator Skin Specials 8” & 6”ball (white and blue balls) also (rainbow colored balls) There should be more balls than there are players, so that the teams do not run out of balls to throw at the earth-ball. One or two large earth-ball will be on the centerline to start the game. Suggestions: To start the game, have the kids stand on their starting line and say, “Ready – Set – Throw” When a lot of players are coming and complaining. Have everyone go to starting positions and review the three rules of gym class (good communication & social skills). Those players who do not follow the rules of the game or gym class rules will sit out. Use the three rules of gym class Be Safe Follow directs the first time = Follow the rules of the game Treat people & equipment with respect GLOSSARY: Gator Skin Balls: The game always starts with all players on each side with a ball (ball size 8” or 6”). Center Line: Player cannot steps over the centerline where the earth-ball is when starting the game. Tagging: This is NOT a tagging game, plays may not throw balls at other players. If student is throwing at other players, ask them to come over to you to review the rules.
