Leadership
In daily basis, people facing a different problem with different situation. The deal style will
be depends on the ability, knowledge and background of decision maker. Ordinary people are not
similar as leaders when facing a situation. Leaders and management people are different because
their acts are count and affect others. So, successful leaders have to deal with new situations,
with different circumstances and different kinds of responses, before making decision and judge.
Leaders supposed to have ability to identify and analyses the situation depend on the complexity.
This paper will try to help to get characteristics of leader. It will describe many things such the
definition of leadership, important of leadership qualities and describe a number of leadership
styles.
There is a lot of meaning to explain a leadership such as, a person that influences others to
achieve a goal. Here is a history quote, to help understand the concept of leadership “Leadership
should be born out of the understanding of the needs of those who would be affected by It." _
Marian Anderson. "People ask the difference between a leader and a boss. The leader works in
the open, and the boss is covert. The leader leads, and the boss drives." _Theodore Roosevelt.
So, it can be notice that there is a different between being a leader or a manager. Leader is the
one who creates while a manager is just administers. It can see also that a leader inspires others
to trust him whereas the manager relies on control. The important for leadership can be justified
as many things such as motivation people by inspiration character, providing guidance to achieve
a certain goal, and a lot of criteria that's organization need.
A leader has to possess several personality traits to be an effective leader. Six characteristic
will be explain in equal to be a familiar with leadership qualities. Integrity is inner values, which
can be shows to other by and during actions. Integrity is a set of moral or ethical values. A leader
should be characterized by this quality to have the trust of his followers. Dedication it can be
explain as spending all the time and energy to achieve a certain goal. Open-minded, It means
being able to listen to new ideas, regardless if it conforms to your way of thinking or not.
Creativity is another one of leader qualities. That’s mean the ability to think in a different way,
to get outside of the box that create a different solutions. Fairness and humility are two
qualities which connect together. Being aware that he is no better than other members. A humble
leader job supposed to be trying to elevate everyone. This is a role of being a fairness leader, by
dealing with all in a justice way.
Coaching leader and supporting, these two styles leader aiming to help others to achieve
their goals. These can be used over team members to develop the job requirements. It is done
when the member of team already recognizes his weaknesses. So leader try to work closely to be
able to mentor him and give all the support he needs. That will ensure he gain all the knowledge
and skills he needs to be successful .Example, “Red Holtzman (NBA coach) mentored Phil
Jackson (NBA coach)”. Democratic Leader The leaders who follow this model let the
employees to be part in decision making, but usually this will slows down decision. Example of
Democratic leader is President John F. Kennedy. Affiliative Leader, which is aiming to keep
their team members happy, in order to create a harmonious work environment. For example is
Joe Torre the ex-manager of the New York Yankees.
As a conclusion, normally people decision has not effect or has a limited effect. Instead the
leader’s decision will be counts. People that encourage others to achieve a certain goal can be
called a leader. The leader should characterize with a lot of values to be effective such as
integrity and open-mind. There is more than one style to be applied like a democratic leader.
