JOB OVERVIEW
The Sector Development Branch is active in all major agriculture and seafood communities of British Columbia to foster
economic development. The Industry Consultant, Food Processing, is position that reports to the Manager, Industry
Development, Sector Development Branch. The Sector Development Branch provide frontline expertise and experience to
cultivate agrifood and seafood industry growth at both regional and provincial levels as part of providing professional,
strategic agrifoods leadership to external clients. This position is part of team of Industry Specialists in which food
processing is a vital value added link across all agrifood and seafood commodities to optimize innovative opportunities in
processing and support food processing growth in British Columbia within a federal and global context.
The Industry Consultant, Food Processing purpose is to provide consultation, professional expertise, and coordination in
the delivery of consulting services specific to food processing in British Columbia. The consultant provides strategic and
professional expert advice to the Ministry based on a thorough knowledge and analysis of the food processing sector and
its current and emerging issues. This also includes collation and synthesis of industry ideas, concerns and viewpoints in
regard to government priorities and activities affecting the sector. The Consultant is expected to work closely with global,
federal, provincial and regional clients both internal to government and external.
The Industry Consultant is expected to work closely with industry personnel and their representative bodies, with other
Ministry branches, other government departments, and all levels of government, including First Nations. The position
also provides significant input regarding strategic planning for the Branch and Division and is expected to reflect critical
competitiveness issues and opportunities for food processing.
ACCOUNTABILITIES

Leads the delivery of assigned consulting services in food processing.

Seeks advice from experts within or external to government on issues related to agrifoods processing.

Participates in and/or leads the implementation of new and strategic business processes. In collaboration with
partners (agrifoods processing sector, primary producers, and government representatives), identifies and
develops strategies, markets, products, processes or services that improve competitiveness and encourage
value-added market opportunities/diversification in response to changing market demands.

Documents, tracks and analyses consulting activities, outcomes and trends. Documents, tracks and analyzes the
potential impact of issues (e.g. economic, competitive, regulatory, and technological change) and events (e.g.
changes in parameters and producer circumstances) that may impact the agrifoods processing sector and
develops recommendations to address challenges.

Networks with colleagues in all locations to gain information on trends and opportunities.

Acquires in-depth knowledge of the area of speciality and the clients’ businesses. Acquires and maintains indepth knowledge of the agrifoods processing industry, provincially and globally, and develop strategic alliances
and liaisons with agrifoods processors and industry, primary producers, and government to achieve improved
competitiveness.

Provides professional advice to internal and external clients regarding options/activities in agrifoods processing.
This includes providing analysis and recommended changes to policy, procedures, legislation and regulations
designed to achieve mandated goals. Works with partners (agrifoods processing sector, primary producers, and
government) to advise on business development and regulatory issues related to industry competitiveness and
sector self-reliance.

Provides professional advice as a specialist in support of Ministry of Agriculture decision making regarding
British Columbia’s diverse agrifoods processing industry. This includes providing advice, options and
recommendations to Ministry on all aspects of BC agrifoods processing (e.g. current state, financial feasibility,
best practices, emerging technologies, success stories, and economic impacts) via briefing notes, reports, and
responses for executive to respond to: media, general public, industry, other ministries and other levels of
government.

Leads and participates in special food processing projects or assignments. Participate in federal, provincial and
ministry specific initiatives designed to achieve cross divisional goals and priorities.
JOB REQUIREMENTS

Master or Bachelor's Degree in a related field such as Agriculture, Food Science, Economics, or related degree or
certification; and,

Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Experience:

A minimum of 2 years’ experience working with an industry/sector, including consultation, seeking consensus,
forming agreements and engaging industry associations;

A minimum of 2 years’ experience handling multiple priorities concurrently; and,

Experience developing long term strategic and/or program planning.
Special Requirements:

Successful completion of security screening requirements of the BC Public Service, which may include a criminal
records check, and/or Criminal Records Review Act (CRRA) check, and/or enhanced security screening checks as
required by the ministry (Note: It is important that you read the job posting carefully to understand the
specific security screening requirements pertaining to the position).
Preference may be given to applicants with (experience & knowledge):

A strong understanding of the local and global competitiveness issues facing the British Columbia agrifoods
processing industries.

A strong knowledge of BC's agrifoods processing and/or primary agriculture sectors' production systems,
operational realities, sustainability challenges, economic, political and social issues.

Preferred related experience in British Columbia.

Related business education (i.e., Bachelor's Degree in Agriculture or a related science with a business focus, a
business degree, MBA etc.).
