2017 Universiade – Taekwondo Expression of Interest Introduction Australian Taekwondo (AT) is seeking Expressions of Interest (EoI) from athletes, coaches and trainers for the Australian Team for the 2017 Summer Universiade (World University Games) which will be held in Taipei from 19~30 August 2017, with Taekwondo being contested between 20~26 August. AT will nominate a Taekwondo team to Australian University Sport (AUS) for their consideration and endorsement. AUS reserve the right to send a smaller team than nominated, or no team at all should received EoI’s not be of a standard suitable for a world championship level competition. The makeup of the coaching staff will therefore depend on the final selection of the team. EoI’s received after the closing date of 5 April 2017 will not be considered for nomination to AUS. Events To be Contested Both Kyorugi and Poomsae competitions will be contested with each country assigned a quota of 8 female and 8 male athletes for Kyorugi, with a maximum one (1) competitor per weight division. Poomsae has a quota of 5 female and 5 male, but competitors may enter more than one category of Poomsae, and may compete in both Kyorugi and Poomsae. In addition, Kyorugi Team Competitions are also available. Athletes wishing to be considered for both Poomsae and Kyorugi must lodge an application for both disciplines. Contested Divisions Kyorugi Individual Female up to 46 kg +46 kg to 49 kg +49 to 53 kg +53 to 57 kg +57 to 62 kg +62 to 67 kg +67 to 73 kg +73 kg Male up to 54 kg +54 to 58 kg +58 to 63 kg +63 to 68 kg +68 to 74 kg +74 to 80 kg +80 to 87 kg +87 kg Poomsae The following Poomsae divisions will be contested: • Female Individual • Male Individual • Female Team – three competitors • Male Team – three competitors • Mixed Pair Team – one female and one male International University Sports Federation Eligibility Requirements for Athletes The International University Sports Federation (FISU) is responsible for the organisation and governance of the World University Games and athletes must also meet the FISU eligibility criteria to be nominated. Note that it is the athlete’s responsibility to establish they meet all FISU and AUS eligibility requirements. These requirements can be summarised as follows: • Must be an Australia Citizen; • Be at least 17 years and less than 28 years of age on 1 January 2017; and be either: • Enrolled and currently studying a diploma or higher courses at a university, TAFE* (*conditions apply) or other tertiary institution. Note that deferred students are not eligible for selection; Or • Have graduated from a university in the year immediately prior to the event (ie: graduated after August 2016). Athletes recommended for selection will need to complete and submit the FISU eligibility certificate. Selection Criteria Eligibility Nominating athletes must fulfil the following conditions to be considered for selection: • • • • • • Athletes must be a current member of Australian Taekwondo. Athletes must have a current 2017 GAL (Global Athlete License) issued via Australian Taekwondo. Athletes must be of Black Belt standard and a holder of a Kukkiwon Dan Certificate. As at 1 March 2017, Kyorugi athletes must be placed in the top 3 in their respective weight division at this year’s national team / squad selection events, national championships, or have finished in the top 4 in a WTF sanctioned international competition (G1 or higher) since June 2016. Rankings must be based on competition under WTF Competition Rules and Regulations. As at 1 March 2017, Poomsae athletes must be placed in the top 3 in their respective division at the 2016 national team / squad selection events, national championships, or have finished in the top 4 in a WTF sanctioned international competition since June 2016. Rankings must be based on competition under WTF Competition Rules and Regulations. Athletes will be expected, in general, to have had at least two years’ experience competing at the national level, and have also competed at international competitions under WTF Competition Rules and Regulations. In assessing the EoI’s received, the following will be considered. Please note that these are guidelines in relation to consideration of applicants and they do not in any way guarantee that an applicant will be selected. An indicative cost provided by AUS is at this stage $4000. Please do not nominate if you will not be able to meet this cost, as athletes withdrawing from the team often results in denying other athletes the opportunity to compete at the Universiade. All team members, including coaches and trainers, will be required to meet the self-funding costs/levy. The levy, as determined by AUS, covers travel and includes accommodation, meals, dress uniforms, insurance, participation fees, etc. Financial assistance may be available from your university or local government. Please check with your relevant university sports association or guild. Final participation costs and payment deadlines will be communicated to all members of the team upon confirmation of selection. Entry As per the FISU Regulations, and as the FISU member in Australia, entry in the Universiade / World University Games must be authorized by AUS, and as such AT will forward the nominated team to AUS for their endorsement. Entry to the Universiade / World University Championships may only be via endorsement and authorisation of AUS. Nominations Nomination Forms must be submitted online by 5 April 2017 using the following forms: 2017 Universiade–EoI Kyorugi Taekwondo – for all Kyorugi Athlete, Coach and Trainer applications. 2017 Universiade-EoI Poomsae Taekwondo – for all Poomsae Athlete and Coach applications.
