The Cay Final Projects
You must choose 2 of the following projects to complete.
1. Travel Brochure
2. Wanted Poster
3. Bookmark
4. Tableau
5. Author Letter
Each project is worth 25 points. You may complete a
third project for extra credit. If you think of a project
that you would like to do that is not on the list, come talk
to me. The projects are due October 17.
Travel Brochure
The Travel Brochure can be created from a piece of construction
paper. The paper should be folded into 3 sections. It should be
completed in the following manner:
• On the cover, the title of the book and its author should be
listed. There should also be an attractive illustration of the
setting.
• The Brochure should contain the following things:
o Description of the setting of the story
o Convincing words to persuade someone to visit the area
o Areas of interest for sightseers.
o Recommendations from famous people
o Directions for getting there
Wanted Poster
The Wanted Poster will be made with a piece of construction
paper and must contain the following information:
• Drawing of a character: The student will draw what he
thinks the character looks like. The background should
be from the setting of the novel.
• Alias: Explain that an alias is another name for the
character, like a nickname. If the character does not
have one in the story, have them make up one based
on the character's actions.
• Physical Description: The student will write a paragraph
describing how the character looks. This should include
the character's age, height, weight, hair color, eye
color, and any distinguishing marks, such as scars.
• What is the character like?: The student will write a
paragraph describing how the character acts, thinks,
or feels. How does the character relate to people
around him or her?
• Warning: What should a person do if they see this
character? Are they dangerous? Who should be
called?
Bookmark
Students who choose to create a Bookmark should use a 4" x 8"
piece of paper. Bookmarks must be colored. Here are the things
that this project must contain:
The Bookmark must contain the following information:
• Front of Bookmark:
Title of the book
Author's name
Illustration of setting or character
• Back of Bookmark:
A paragraph giving the student's opinion of the

Tableau
Students who choose to create a tableau should use a 12" x 18" piece
of paper. The paper should be divided into 8 sections. In each
section the student will illustrate an event from the book using the
entire space. The events should be in sequential order from
beginning to end. On the back of the paper, the student will number
from 1 to 8 and write a sentence or two explaining what is going on in
that section of the tableau. Here are the things that this project must
contain: !
• Eight drawings that represent events from the story
• Sentences that explain what has gone on in each section of the
tableau
• Sentences that have correct grammar, spelling, capitalization,
and punctuation
• Pictures that are colorful
Author Letter
Students who choose to create an author letter should use notebook
paper. The student will address the letter to Theodore Taylor,
Laguna Beach, California.
The author letter should be done in proper friendly letter form and
contain the following information.
• Date the letter is being sent
• Proper greeting
• Introductory paragraph telling who the student is and why
he/she is writing
• Reasons why they liked The Cay
• Questions they have about The Cay
• Questions they have about Theodore Taylor
• A closing paragraph
• Salutations
• Signature
The student may want to actually mail the letter to Theodore
