SURREY CRICKET COACHING COURSES
Many of the professional and coaching staff of
the County Club started their cricketing careers
by attending one of the Club’s Junior
Coaching Courses.
AIMS OF THE COURSES
• T
o find the next generation of
cricketers to represent Surrey County
Cricket Club. The player pathway

o provide as many children as
possible with the opportunity to
develop a talent and understanding of
the game, which will hopefully develop
into a lifelong love of the game.

o provide children between 5 and
16 years of age, of all abilities and
experience, a suitable course at an
appropriate time of year.

o relay information to children in
an informative but enjoyable way.
We will staff our courses with highly
qualified and knowledgeable coaches.

SURREY LEGENDS
MARK BUTCHER U6 – U8
Mark made his debut for Surrey in 1992; he was the
last Surrey captain who captained England as well
as being a top order batsman. During his career he
played 71 tests for England with highest score of 173
against Australia. Mark played over 500 first class
matches scoring over 25,000 runs for Surrey and
England.
MARK RAMPRAKASH U9 – U10
Mark made his debut for Surrey 2001 as a top order batsman
and has since scored over 12,000 runs for the county. In
2008 he became just the 25th man to score a hundred firstclass hundreds and averaged over 100 in 2006 and 2007
seasons. Mark has also played 52 test matches for England,
scoring 2 hundreds and 12 half centuries. In all Mark has
played 900 first class matches scoring over 45,000 runs.
ALEC STEWART U11 – U13
Alec made his debut for Surrey in 1981 as a wicket keeper
batsman and scored 40,000 runs for the county before
retiring in 2003. He also played a record 133 Test Matches
for England, scoring almost 8,500 runs and claiming 263
catches and 14 stumpings. In all Alec played over 1200 first
class matches scoring over 52,000 runs together with 1585
catches and 109 stumpings. Alec is now actively involved
with coaching the Surrey Professional Squad.
GRAHAM THORPE U14 – U16
Graham made his debut for Surrey in 1988 and went on to score
over 31,000 runs as a middle order left handed batsman. He has
also played 100 Test Matches for England scoring almost 7,000
runs. After a successful spell coaching the New South Wales team in
Australia Graham rejoined Surrey as batting coach in 2009, before
moving into the England set up in 2010. In all Graham scored over
40,000 runs in nearly 900 first class matches.
AIMS OF EACH COURSE AGE
MARK BUTCHER U6 – U8
Courses for this age group are aimed at trying to give
children a fun first experience of cricket. The aim of
these courses is to attract children to playing regular
cricket and to develop fundamental movement skills
(agility, balance, coordination and speed). The hour
long sessions involve basic skills sessions and lots of fun games (using a soft
ball throughout). To qualify for these courses children must be born between 1st September
2004 and 31st August 2007.
MARK RAMPRAKASH U9 – U10
Courses for this age group are aimed at expanding cricket
specific skills, developing technique and tactical awareness
through skills drills and games-play. Soft balls are used in order
to aid skill development and the children undergo quantitative
testing to aid our talent identification process twice during the
programme. To qualify for these courses children must be born
between1st September 2002 and 31st August 2004.
ALEC STEWART U11 – U13
Courses for this age group look to further progress
the technical and tactical knowledge of the players.
Hard balls are used for the first time in net situations.
Coaching within these groups becomes more specific
to match play and potential game scenarios. To qualify
for these courses children must be born between 1st
September 1999 and 31st August 2002.
GRAHAM THORPE U14 – U16
Courses for this age group look to further progress
the technical and tactical knowledge of the players
and hard balls continue to be used in skills drill
and net situations. Coaching methods focus on
the acquisition of advanced skills specific to match
play for this age group. To qualify for these courses
children must be born between 1st September 1996
and 31st August 1999.
