Software Defined Storage Storage Built for the Virtualized Data Center Kelly Murphy Founder / CTO Gridstore Overview Context - The Software-Defined Data Center What problem is SDS trying to solve SDS is a new architecture for storage How Gridstore Delivers SDS Today Software Defined Data Center Management & Orchestration Compute Network Storage Virtualization – Logical networks – Built for virtualization. Increased availability, flexibility and utilization. Defined in minutes and bound to workloads. Reduce cost and complexity – increase performance and scaling. Virtualization Changes Everything and Nothing New Container - VM Virtualized Resource Pool Nothing above or below the hypervisor knows anything changed “Virtualization Breaks Traditional Storage”, Top Virtualization Issues #1 – Application performance (57%) #2 – Capital cost of storage (38%) #3 – Storage complexity (36%) Gridstore Survey, May 2013, ESG Report 2013, Taneja Report 2013 Problem: You can not optimize many-to-one Poor Performance Unpredictable. No visibility. No Resolution. many-to-one Complexity Manage LUNs not VMs. Bloated data services. Costs Explode Overprovision servers, storage, data services. Thirty-three percent of the I/O were writes (emulating database updates), and the remainder were reads. In all cases, the workload generated a high level of I/O activity with small access sizes. This, combined with a large cache resident working set, created a workload that was well suited for evaluating the efficiency and scalability of our tested storage solutions. Independent Validation – Price/Performance ESG Lab measured the performance of each of the storage solution scenarios by calculating the sum of the number of transactions processed per second as the virtual machines scaled from two to four. The OLTP workload and concurrent user counts remained constant for each test and each configuration. The results are summarized in Lab Validation: Gridstore Storage 3.0 Figure 19 and Table 2. Many organizations have Microsoft and W experts, as well as storage experts. Many SAN IT vendors require vendor-specific storage specialists to pro manage, and monitor the storage infrastructure. Gridstore eliminates that need by moving the storage management to Windows Server 2012. After installing the Gridstore virtual controller, the storage appea locally attached disk, and grid and node management is performed through an intuitive and simple user i allowing Microsoft and Windows administrators to quickly and easily manage their applications and stora 8X Price / Performance Why This Matters © 2014 by The Enterprise Strategy Group, Inc.
