Modelling forest and woody biomass management

Announcement for a Research Opportunity with Pollutant Inventories and
Reporting Division, Environment Canada, Gatineau, Quebec, Canada
Project Title: Modelling forest and woody biomass management
The Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use (AFOLU) group of the Pollutant
Inventories and Reporting Division (PIRD) of Environment and Climate Change Canada
(ECCC) is currently looking for a research professional to work in the area of forest
ecosystem modelling.
Our division is responsible for reporting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions under the
United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the air
pollutant emissions to United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). The
Division produces the national GHG, Air Pollutant, and Black Carbon Inventories.
Benefits of working with our team include ongoing and interactive training, the
experience of a program’s annual life cycle delivering tangible products, and increased
knowledge on quantification and analysis of greenhouse gases and air pollutants.
The products of the Pollutant Inventory and Reporting Division (PIRD) of Environment
and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) are at the heart of Canada’s approach to manage
pollutants; advances in inventory quality provide important information to inform
pollutant and greenhouse gas policy in Canada.
Over the past 12 years, ECCC has collaborated closely with the Canadian Forest
Service of Natural Resources Canada to produce estimates of anthropogenic carbon
fluxes from Canada’s managed forests. Over the next several years we will be
continuing this close collaboration and investing in making further improvements,
focusing mainly on improving our ability to capture impacts of forest management
activities on forest carbon stocks.
To this end we are looking to bring new experts to our inventory team who will be
specialized in forest ecosystem management and modelling. We will be offering term
positions through either post-doctoral fellowships or interchange programs, or if the
candidate has already prequalified in a Canadian Federal Government employment
pool.
The candidate will participate in applied research projects that will focus on applying
their knowledge of modelling to the improvement of the representation of urban trees,
woody biomass and forest management in Canada’s national forest greenhouse gas
inventory.
The Interchange Canada program is of particular interest to individuals with positions in
organizations that wish to increase their knowledge about the science carried out in
Canada’s Public Service.

For post-doctoral candidates the position is available for a maximum of three years
pending annual review and availability of funds. The candidate must be eligible for a
Visiting Fellowship in Canadian Government Laboratories administered by the Natural
Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC): http://www.nserccrsng.gc.ca/Students-Etudiants/PD-NP/Laboratories-Laboratoires/index_eng.asp.
The position will remain open until a suitable candidate has been found.
