Your snack is from Paradise Gardens, 50 miles away in Paradise, MT. It was processed just a few blocks away on Main St. in Ronan. Remember those carrots you ate for snack last week? Butternut squash is also colored orange by beta carotene! Can you remember why this nutrient is important? It gives you super sight! Your body turns as much beta carotene as it needs into Vitamin A to keep your eyes and other parts of your body healthy. Butternut squash grows on vines. The plant flowers and then a squash grows! Butternut squash is a winter squash which grows well here. We think of squash as a vegetable, but it’s actually the fruit because it holds the seeds! Your squash snack was specially prepared by your school food service staff. It was baked in an oven with some seasoning. That’s called roasting and it makes the squash taste especially sweet and yummy. This squash was brought to you by the Western Montana Growers Cooperative, a group of 38 farmers.
