Kickball Rules
It is assumed that all Intramural Participants have read all policies and procedures in the Intramural
Sports Handbook. The purpose of this Handbook is to assure equitable and enjoyable participation as
possible for all participants at Clarion University. All participants, referees and staff are responsible for
all of this information
Players:
 Games are played with five (5) players
 Must have a minimum of two (2) females in the field at all times in coed play
 Roster limit for all teams in eight (8) players
 You may start a game with a minimum of three (3) players
Gameplay:
 Teams may bat up to eight (8) players in the order they sign in
o Only five (5) total players in the field at any time
 Games are five (5) innings or 25 minutes in length
 Max of five (5) runs per inning
 A new inning will not start after 20 minutes
 There is a ten (10) run limit per inning (except the 5th inning)
 Three (3) innings will be considered a full game if time runs out
 There are no restrictions as to where players may position themselves while on defense
 The only out-of-bounds territory is to the right of the first base line. ALL other kicks are fair balls
 Pitchers hand is in effect
o The ball is dead when the pitcher has possession of the ball near the pitching mound
Base Running:
 NO SLIDING- any attempt to slide or dive will result in an out
 When a defensive player has the ball a base runner may not deliberately, with great force, crash
into the defensive player. This will result in an out
 Balls leaving the field of play on a throwing error will result in all runners advancing one base
 Runners may not advance off the base until the ball as been kicked (NO leadoffs/steals)
 Runners may tag up on any fly ball
 Pitchers hand- runners may not advance once the pitcher has possession of the ball near the
pitchers mound
Kicking:
 NO bunting
o Any bunts will result in an out
 Kickers have three (3) pitches to kick a fair ball
 The ball must be kicked within the kicking box
o Kicks made outside the kicking box result in an out
 Teams must kick in the order they sign in and must keep the same rotation
 Home runs:

Men: the ball must fly over the track railing and hit anywhere above
Women: Any ball that hits the back wall, track railing or over while on the fly
Any ball kicked into the far basketball basket is an automatic home run
Pitching:
 Pitches should be rolled at a moderate pace
o The umpire/referee will call a re-pitch if deemed to fast
 Pitches should not bounce towards the kickers but rather roll smoothly
Fielding:
 There is unlimited substitution of players on defense
o Only players who signed in at the beginning of the game may sub
 Infield fly rule is NOT in effect
o If an infielder drops a fly ball in a force play situation, the ball is dead, the kicker is rules
out, and all runners must return to their bases
 Balls may be caught off of ANY wall, divider or ceiling, except those bouncing back into play after
hitting the track (home run territory)
 Outs may be obtained by:
o A fly ball caught in the field of play
o A player, off the base, is tagged or hit by the ball held or thrown by a defender
 If a ball is thrown, the runner is only out if the ball hits below the shoulders (in
the standing position)
 If a player ducts and gets hit in the head, they are out
o A player is subject to a force out when applicable
o If a kicker attempts a bunt or kicks the ball outside of the kickers box
Overtime:
 Games can end in a tie when:
o The score is tied after a full 5-inning game
o The score is tied after a full inning is played past the 20 minute mark (when no new
inning will begin)
 In the event of a tie:
o Teams will choose one kicker each for a sudden death kick off
 Kickers will get one at bat attempt to get as far around the bases as possible
 i.e.- the first batter hits a double, if the opposing kicker hits a single or an out,
their team loses. If the opposing batter hits a triple or homerun, their team wins
 If both players kick the same (both kick a double, out, etc.) each team will pick a
new kicker to bat next- this will continue similar to soccer penalty kicks until a
winner is declared
 In coed: the overtime kickers must alternate between male and female
