At East Elementary, Claudia West helps Ali and Kim Obeidh register their daughter, Salma, for kindergarten. Students who will enter kindergarten this fall may attend summer school this year. FLW boundary lines to change To better balance the changing population on Fort Leonard Wood, some boundary lines for students in kindergarten through fifth grades will change for the 2015-16 school year. The Waynesville R-VI Board of Education approved the boundary changes during a special meeting on April 30. Students residing on Daniels, Knight and Montrose streets will go to Thayer Elementary next school year. Students residing on Turner Street and these connecting streets – Peden Place, Graves Court, Molter Court, Bowen Court, Turner Court, Rideout Court and Lee Court – will go to Wood/Pick Elementary next year. For those not wanting to make the change, the school district will make every effort to allow students to remain at their current school through a “grandfather” clause; however, any new student enrolling for the 2015-16 school year will not have the “grandfather” option – unless it is a kindergartener who already has a sibling enrolled. “We do not want to split families,” says Hilary Bales, director of special services. “Kindergarteners with older siblings currently enrolled would be included in the grandfathering.” Transportation will only be provided to the school assigned within a boundary; transportation will not be provided for students opting for the “grandfather” status. The process of redrawing of boundary lines started as a result of the 4th MEB’s departure and subsequent student population decline at Wood. The district will close Wood Elementary late this summer and move Wood students to Pick Elementary this fall. The district also has requested that Pick’s name be changed to Wood Elementary. “We have several things going on at once, but we hope that this boundary change will result in a more equitable division of our student population and better use of our facilities,” says Dr. Continued on page 2 Registration is open for the 4th annual Adventure Leadership Camp this summer for Waynesville students who will be entering grades 4 though 12 this fall.
