Agenda Item 6 Possible Action Points from the Towns Alive Report

Agenda Item 6 Possible Action Points from the Towns Alive Report Meeting 2 September 2014 Street paving/furniture/signage There is unanimity on the need to spruce up the town. Actions: 1.0 Could MCC and Town Councillors get clarifiication from MCC whether there is a budget for public realm work in Abergavenny, how much is budgetted and what it can be used for. 2.0 Could the Councillors propose to the MCC that a decision be made on the library and confirm that £1 or 1.5 mill will be reserved for purchase of new property or renovation of the library and that the remaining £2 to 2.5 mill can be used for public realm improvements. 3.0 Could the MCC/Town Council/ the Town Team ) seek design/tenders for the new Paving/furniture/signage without waiting for the decisions above regarding finance Further Research Suggestions were made that the Towns Alive Report could be improvedby footfall studies at the Frogmore Street end of Town, on Thursdays re. the impact of the Farmers markets. Actions. The T.Konieczny and myself volunteer to coordinate this. If we could have 3 or 4 volunteers the work could be completed in just a few weeks. Car Parking The question of parking in the town was raised. The Whole Place survey and ABC arrived at the conclusion that a Free after Three policy should be pursued Actions Could the MCC/Town Councillors persuade MCC to make an immediate decision to introduce a 6 month experiment in Abergavenny? All that would be needed to implement is a notice on each parking meter saying 'For the next six months untill xx/xx/xx parking after 3 pm is free.' After 6 months the experiment could be reviewed by ABC to see if it had any affect on shopping and by MCC to see what effect it has on revenues from parking. We would then have a factual basis for the endless discussion on parking. Younger People and Youth Several remarks were made regarding the need to involve younger people in the whole place town centre regenearation process. At the meeting a young person expressed interest in the idea of an Abergavenny Youth Council. This had been raised by the Civic Society after a recent study visit to Cirencester. Action Could the Town Team/Town Council or the Civic Society sponsor a young person to visit Cirencester ( perhaps with the MCC officer responisble for youth) and produce a report on how it works and if a similar process might be appropriate in Abergavenny?
