Ironically, this ruler’s lack of love was an indicator that the

likely not to come, despite God’s patience.

We can see from verses like Luke 4:40 that Jesus did not totally
disregard Sabbath regulations, but rather refused to uphold
regulations on rest at the expense of love and compassion.
His participation in the synagogue service here shows us that…
1. Jesus has not ____________ Himself from Jewish life.
2. Jesus has not been _____ _____ from synagogue by His
adversaries.
SUBPOINT: Despite the fact that Jesus had been scrutinized before for
appearing to violate Sabbath laws and traditions, He did not let the
critical attitude of others dissuade Him from doing what was loving and
truly right.
Luke has recorded two other conflicts that occurred in the context
of the Judean synagogues:
Galatians 6:9-10 – 9 And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in
due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. 10 Therefore, as we
have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the
household of faith.
Luke 4:16-30 – Jesus __________ Himself with Messianic prophecy
Luke 6:6-11 – Jesus __________ the Pharisees/scribes by healing
a man’s crippled hand on the Sabbath
Basic reasons why the Pharisees/Scribes were angered by Jesus:
5:21
Jesus expressed Christological claims/actions
5:27-32
Jesus associated with tax collectors and sinners
6:24-26, 16:19-31 Jesus denounced the rich and arrogant
5:33-39, 11:37-44 Jesus violated oral traditions
Here, 6:6-11
Jesus acted freely to do God’s work on Sabbath
We can say confidently that the crippled woman in Luke 13 did not
come to synagogue that day hoping to be __________.

Luke 13:14 – But the ruler of the synagogue answered with
____________, because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath
Why did the ruler of the synagogue react with indignation against Jesus’
compassion for this disabled woman? Because to him, Jesus’ actions
represented a __________.

Our ___________ for doing good ought not be a desire for the
praise of men. Just as importantly, a ________ of being criticized or
misunderstood by men should never keep us from doing what we
know to be good.
