SHSLSC for Heads News October edition

Winter is over and the beach landscape has been re-carved
by the recent floods and emergency opening of the river
mouth and with spring on its way now Surf Club activity has
returned to Seven Mile Beach too. Weekend Patrols resumed
on Saturday 20thh September with the first club patrol of the
season. We have just 3 patrols currently rostered to patrol
on Sundays and public holidays from mid September to the
end of April each year. Relocations for family, work and
education saw 4 long standing club regulars move away
from the area recently which has left the club one patrol
down from last season. This has meant we have had to
negotiate hard, through the memo of understanding contract
,for extra cover for Saturdays from the Surf Life Saving NSW
and Shoalhaven Council Lifeguard Services. A Bronze
Medallion and Surf Rescue Certificate training course is
underway on Sunday mornings and it is not too late to join
in to train as a member and contribute to this essential
community service. Please contact our chief instructor Karl
on [email protected] or come to the club on a
Sunday morning at 9am if you are interested in becoming a
trained lifesaver. There are many within our village and
beyond who have been past patrolling members and we
would encourage you to come back and update your skills as
a surf lifesaver .You will also see how vibrant the club has
become in the past few years. Sunday mornings are a bustle
of fun activity and chatter since our Nippers programme
resumed on October 11th under the watchful eye of junior
activities Co-ordinator Anna Martin. With 5 parent volunteer
age managers plus trained water safety the 50+ Nippers are
in safe hands on the beach and in the ocean as they learn the
basics of surf life saving through fun learning modules. You
can still register after the initial rego days of 19th Sept, 3rd
October and 11th Oct if we have space in your child’s age
group. Your child will also need to pass a swim skill
proficiency test before participating in Nipper’s water
activities. Nippers enquiries to Anna on
[email protected] .
We are also taking part in the national surf clubs open day
scheme on October 18th so please call in to see what we are
about , watch surf , beach and first aid demonstrations and
join us for a coffee and sausage sizzle from 10am -12.30. Our
club isn’t just about Life Saving it’s also about sharing a
good time socially too through service to the community . As
always information is on our club website
