National Pathology Week
November 7-13 2016
Trainee Sponsorship for Public and Professional Engagement
NCRI Cancer Conference, Liverpool, UK, 6-9 November 2016
Funded by the Royal College of Pathologists and supported by NCRI’s
Cellular Molecular Pathology initiative
Coinciding with National Pathology Week, the Royal College of Pathologists (RCPath) is
generously providing funds to sponsor up to four trainees to attend the NCRI Cancer
Conference in Liverpool (6-9 November 2016) to host an exhibition stand and benefit
from exposure to the inspiring research presented at the Conference. To apply, you must
be a trainee in Cellular Pathology and you must not have access to alternative sources of
funding such as funds from an active research programme, research contract or
institution. The intention of this sponsorship is to provide an inspiring introduction to
research for academically-minded trainees who are considering options for academic
training and an academically active future career in Cellular Molecular Pathology.
Please do not re-apply if you were funded to participate in the 2013 or 2014 NCRI
Cancer Conference.
Successful applicants will be selected by a small committee of RCPath and NCRI’s
Cellular Molecular Pathology (CM-Path) initiative representatives and each will be
reimbursed for:



Registration for the full NCRI National Cancer Conference programme.
Reservation for Conference Dinner
Contribution to travel (standard/economy class) and accommodation expenses,
up to a maximum of £250, on production of valid receipts.
The NCRI Cancer Conference has an excellent programme (view it at
http://conference.ncri.org.uk) with numerous world-class plenary speakers, a highly
successful public engagement programme and a hugely diverse programme of research
talks, posters and themed symposia. A ‘junior investigators’ programme is organised by
the Experimental Cancer Medical Centres Network as a satellite to the programme and
there will be a CM-Path hosted satellite symposium addressing molecular pathology
topics. There will also be a schools’ event, to which the successful applicants may be
asked to contribute.
The aim of RCPath and CM-Path in supporting selected individuals to attend is to
increase the exposure of Cellular Pathology trainees to exciting and inspiring research,
and to raise the profile of Cellular Pathology as a research discipline within the wider field
of oncology. The sponsored individuals, in addition to attending the main and chosen
satellite activities of the conference, will organise and run an exhibition stand to inform
and interact with public delegates, oncology professionals and researchers regarding
current and anticipated future contributions of pathology to modern cancer research. The
conference coincides with National Pathology Week (7-13 November), adding further
impetus for the promotion of the science of pathology at this important event.
Following the Conference, the sponsored trainees will be expected to contribute
individually and collectively to Conference reports for the RCPath Bulletin and CM-Path
Newsletters.

How to apply
To apply, please provide your personal details on the proforma below, with a brief
personal statement indicating what you hope to contribute and gain professionally from
this opportunity.
You must also provide a proposal, no more than 1 x A4 page in length (font no smaller
than 12 pt) addressing one of the following two options:
A. How might a small group (4-6) of academically-minded trainees best demonstrate the
value of Cellular Pathology to interested members of the public (mainly patients, carers
and survivors), academic oncologists and surgeons, and other cancer researchers, in the
form of an interactive exhibition at the NCRI National Conference.
B. Propose the design and conduct of a ‘pop-up’ research project, relevant to Cellular
Pathology, that 4-6 academically-minded trainees might undertake at the conference.
This might be in the form of a practical activity, survey or data interpretation exercise
involving visitors to the exhibition hall; it should have the aim of generating real results of
value that could form the basis of a subsequent short report for publication in the
RCPath Bulletin..
Dr Bridget Wilkins, RCPath representative on the CM-Path Executive Committee, will
provide mentoring support for successful applicants before and during the conference.
While preparing your application, you may wish to discuss it with Dr Wilkins and you are
most welcome to do so. Please contact her by email ([email protected]) in the first
instance.
Completed applications, including the signed endorsement by your educational
supervisor or head of department, should be returned by email or post to:
