DEPARTMENT OF COGNITIVE SCIENCE
Cognitive science is the study of the ways in
which information is acquired and used by
humans and other living organisms. The field also
includes the study of cognitive systems,
including artificial intelligence. The CEU
Department of Cognitive Science concentrates
on social and biological aspects of human
cognition: how learning, processing, and
sharing information about and with others
takes place, and how computational models of
human cognition can be realized in the brain.
Students and faculty undertake interdisciplinary
research drawing on psychology, neuroscience,
philosophy, mathematical modeling, linguistics,
and the social sciences. The department
currently offers one doctoral program.
Dora Kampis
Country of origin: Hungary
“ I chose to come to CEU because I had been closely
following the work of some of the Cognitive Science
Department professors who are leading in their
field. I really like the multidisciplinarity of the
department and CEU in general. It’s inspiring and
useful to see how similar disciplines are tackling
the same questions only in a different manner. We
can help each other in a very concrete sense on an
everyday basis. I have experienced how fruitful it is
to talk to someone from a distinct but related field.
It gives you better insight into you own topic.”
Doctor of Philosophy in Cognitive Science
This research-based, interdisciplinary program offers specialization in the fields of social
cognition, cognitive development, and formal and biological models of learning. Students
may take courses in cognitive psychology, philosophy of mind, cognitive anthropology, and
computational modeling. They receive practical research training in methods, experimental design, and data analysis in the laboratories of departmental faculty members.
career path
The doctoral program equips students with skills necessary for successful careers in academia and other sectors. Graduates will move into research and teaching positions, meeting the growing demand for experts in social and computational cognitive science. They may
also find positions at organizations that understand how institutional design and governance
benefit from a better understanding of the cognitive bases for decision-making.

DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS
CEU’s Department of Economics is a researchoriented department with an international
faculty holding PhDs from some of the best
universities in the world. We offer three
master’s programs and a PhD in economics.
career path
Our graduates are in high demand from both
the private and public sectors in banking,
business, and at governmental and international
organizations. Many of our alumni pursue
careers in academia.
Julian Adam
Country of origin: Germany
“ For me, studying at CEU has brought together
theoretical knowledge and real-life situations
and data. The latter is especially important since
it is often neglected in academic education. The
combination of theory and practical application
has helped me gain a completely new and more
focused view on economic issues. What I really
appreciate about the Economics Department is
how we deal with one another. We have very open
and deep discussions in class. I have even had
disagreements with professors but I don’t feel that
it’s a bad thing, rather an opportunity for genuine
discussion with a teaching partner. ”

“ I studied literature before coming to CEU. But
I wanted more of a political and social lens, and
the Gender Studies Department has provided that
for me. I think the way studies are handled allows
the space to develop your own ideas through the
strengths of the faculty as well as the creative
environment of CEU. The faculty have varied
backgrounds—some are anthropologists, some
are sociologists, political scientists, historians,
philosophers—and that makes for a wider range
of topics that can be covered. Here we have
a similar investment in feminism and we
collectively strive to advance society.
It has been a very empowering experience.”

Central European University is a “crossroads” university that is home to students and
faculty members from more than 100 countries.
Located in Budapest and accredited in both Hungary and the United States, CEU draws on
the research tradition of great American universities and the most valuable intellectual
traditions of Central Europe. The University offers English-language graduate programs in
the social sciences and humanities, business and economics, environmental sciences and
policy, law, and mathematics.
CEU was founded in 1991 by George Soros, the American-Hungarian financier and
philanthropist, in response to revolutionary changes that were transforming Central and
Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. His goal was to create an institution that
would be a source of intellectual support for building open and democratic societies that
respect human rights.
In the two decades since, CEU has developed a distinct academic approach: combining
regional studies with an international perspective, emphasizing comparative and
interdisciplinary research to generate scholarship and policy initiatives, and promoting
good governance and the rule of law.
CEU is known for excellence in teaching and research—with purpose. At the core of its mission
lies a set of principles: the pursuit of truth wherever it may lead, respect for the diversity of
cultures and peoples, and commitment to resolve differences through debate not denial.
The dozens of people whose faces appear in this publication represent CEU’s worldwide
community of more than 12,000 alumni, faculty, students, staff, and supporters.
We are CEU. And we invite you to join us.

Student/Faculty Research Groups
At CEU, we believe our diverse student body
is our best asset. We are committed to maintaining a student-oriented academic culture,
drawing on the wealth of knowledge and
perspectives that our multicultural, multinational, multilingual student body provides.
Our outstanding 7:1 student/faculty ratio
ensures a dynamic environment for academic
collaboration and debate. It also makes our
faculty members more effective in developing students’ critical thinking skills, honing
their writing, and helping them explore their
individual research interests.
CEU has earned global recognition for
a variety of programs—including political
science, philosophy, and sociology—while
it continues to invest in exciting new fields
such as cognitive science and network
science. Within the region, many of its
programs enjoy premier status, including
business and law.
We offer three, two-year Erasmus Mundus
master’s programs in partnership with
leading European institutions: in public
policy, environmental sciences and policy
management, and women’s and gender
studies. Funded by the European Commission,
these highly competitive and prestigious
programs award scholarships to top
students worldwide to foster intellectual
cooperation and research in Europe.
In both traditional and emerging fields,
CEU encourages creative approaches
to teaching and research. We emphasize
the importance of crossing disciplinary
lines to address complex issues. We pursue
partnerships that help us integrate theoretical research with professional practice.
And we convene leading thinkers from
around the world to explore some of the
most vexing problems facing society.

Welcome to budapest
Budapest is at the center of the “new”
Europe that integrates East and West.
Just a few hours from Vienna, Prague,
and Belgrade, Budapest has been chosen
by numerous international organizations—
including the UN and major multinational
companies—as a base of operations.
It is a vibrant city that is comfortable,
affordable, and safe.
The Performing Arts | The Hungarian
National Opera House, on tree-lined Andrassy
Boulevard, is one of the world’s premier
venues for both opera and ballet, and is an
architectural wonder worth a visit in its own
right. On the Danube south of CEU stands
the Palace of Arts, a state-of-the art concert
hall complex offering classical, jazz, and
other concerts as well as dance performances
and exhibitions at its Ludwig Museum. Boats
moored on the Danube, such as A38 and
the Columbus Jazz Boat, are superb
venues for bands of every musical genre,
and a hotspot for Budapest’s world-class
jazz scene. Also, the Papp Laszlo Sport
Arena draws major international acts
from Sting to Cirque du Soleil as well as
professional sporting events.
Open-Air Fun | Budapest is home to Sziget,
“Europe’s Best Major Festival,” a week-long
extravaganza in August featuring concerts,
food, drink, and camping that attracts
Europe’s biggest bands. From mid-November
through early January, Budapest is home to
several Christmas markets, with hundreds
of vendors and eateries close to campus.
Year-round, Budapest hosts countless
festivals, from wine-tasting to contemporary
design, horse racing to folk arts, documentary film to world music—even a downtown
snowboarding show.
Thermal Baths | Budapest is the “City
of Spas,” with thermal baths dating back
to Ottoman and Roman times. Szechenyi
Baths, the grande dame, is a neo-Baroque
palace in the City Park where the water is
hot enough for soaking under the stars next
to snow banks in January. Each bath has a
totally different character, so it is worth
trying them all. And once a year, on the Night
of Spas, five of them play live music for bathhoppers who make the rounds, soaking and
dancing in their swimsuits till 3 a.m.
Dining | CEU is so centrally located that
everyone will find something to suit their
tastes nearby, whether it be sushi or
goulash, tacos or curry, hamburgers or
hummus. There’s something for every
budget too, from cafeteria-style eateries
to Michelin-starred luxury. Budapest has
a vibrant coffee house culture—practically
invented here at the turn of the century—

that includes intellectual gathering places

Nightlife | A truly new nightlife phenomenon has evolved in Budapest over the
past two decades: “ruin pubs” that occupy
dilapidated courtyards and rooftops transformed into trendy nightspots dotted with
furniture salvaged from flea markets. The
city is also home to jazz lounges, dance
clubs, and bohemian hideaways.
Getting Around | The public transport
system boasts an extensive network of
subways, trams, and buses, with three
railway station hubs. Also, the Ferenc Liszt
International Airport links Budapest with
every major city in Europe and beyond, and
is served by several low-cost airlines along
with major carriers.

CEU Residence Center | Located a few
kilometers south of CEU, the Residence
Center houses over 400 students and is
the heart of off-campus University life.
The complex includes a coffee shop and
cafeteria; lounge areas on each floor;
and a health facility with a fitness room,
swimming pool, and tennis courts. Student
rooms are private, with their own bathrooms.
Activities include concerts, holiday parties,
international food nights, dance and yoga
classes, day trips outside Budapest, hiking
and biking trips, and film screenings.
Student Organizations | Our students are
active in a wide variety of CEU organizations.
The Student Life Office provides logistical
support and funding for student groups
and cultural activities, often in tandem with
the Student Union, which sponsors various
clubs and helps organize extracurricular
activities. These include seasonal parties,
sports events, multicultural festivals, and
the Spring Ball.
Student organizations | include the CEU
Choir, Budapest Spa Lovers Club, Blank
Pages Society, Muslim Student Association,
Sustainable Campus Initiative, Women’s
Soccer Club, Classic Film Club, LGBTQI
Club, Personal Growth Group, Debate
Society, Photography Club, Philosophy Film
Club, and Vegetarian Cooking Club.
University Events | A hub of intellectual
activity, CEU hosts more than 400 events a
year addressing many of the most pressing
issues facing society. Internationally distinguished experts discuss solutions to challenges as diverse as stabilizing the euro
zone, ending impunity for perpetrators of
war crimes, and convincing world leaders
to pursue the most far-reaching climatechange policies. Other recent topics
include the future of energy security and the
future of journalism, Internet governance
and regulation of political communication,
instruments of international justice, and
moral questions of life extension.
The University is also alive with cultural
activity. Its Center for Arts and Culture and
its Open Society Archives, for example, host
hundreds of events every year, including
documentary film screenings, photo and art
exhibitions, public lecturers by art historians,
and concerts by up-and-coming musicians.
The Neighborhood | CEU is in the heart
of Budapest. Located right downtown, just
two blocks from the Danube River, it is
surrounded by art galleries, bookstores,
cafés, theaters, and restaurants. The
campus borders a pedestrian promenade
and sits nestled among some of the city’s
most spectacular architectural landmarks,
including St. Stephen’s Basilica and the
Hungarian Parliament. Uniquely Budapest
activities are within striking distance in
every direction: To the west: walking across
the city’s iconic Chain Bridge and riding the
funicular to the Castle District, with its cozy
restaurants and panoramic views. To the
north: biking along the river and over
to Margaret Island, a huge park with running
and bike paths, spa and pool complexes,
and outdoor bars and restaurants. To the
east: checking out the funky nightlife scene
in the Jewish Quarter. To the south: strolling down Vaci Street, famous for its boutique shopping, outdoor dining, and street
performers. And within one block of CEU:
ordering a cup of world-class coffee, sampling superb Hungarian wines, or indulging
in a scoop of gelato.

“ The cosmopolitan character of CEU’s student
body and teaching staff was one of the many
reasons I applied to the University, but it’s hard
to describe what it’s like to be a part of such a
community for the first time. It continues to have
a profound effect on how I think about history.
The diversity of backgrounds and experiences my
colleagues bring to the classroom has broadened
my knowledge of Central and Eastern Europe in a
way that I can truly begin to place my research in
a comparative frame. And the conversations I have
with classmates outside the seminar rooms continue to enrich my understanding of contemporary
politics in a rapidly changing part of Europe.”

bear in mind all the interested parties in the game.”

Veronika Csikos
Country of origin: hungary
“ The CEU Medieval Studies Department presents
ways to think differently about the medieval
histories of Central Europe and the Central Mediterranean as well as its ancient languages. It offers
an interdisciplinary approach that was completely
unknown to me not only during my local university
education but in a certain sense also in my narrower
field of research (medieval history of art in Central
Europe). By using this methodology, I was able to
tackle connections in my doctoral research which
may have well been invisible to me otherwise. I
hope, that by writing my dissertation by these
means, I can contribute to opening up new ways
in the methodology of Hungarian (and Central
European) research of medieval history of art.”
Master of Arts in Medieval Studies (One Year)
This program is designed for applicants with a strong research agenda and academic
background in medieval history or related disciplines such as philology/literature,
philosophy, art history, or archaeology and a focus on medieval Latin, Slavonic, Byzantine,

interdisciplinary study of the Middle Ages, including an emphasis on modern research
methodologies and the languages of medieval source materials.
Master of Arts in Comparative History:
Interdisciplinary Medieval Studies (Two Years)
Offered jointly with the Department of History, the medieval track of this program focuses
on political, social, and economic history as well as on material and spiritual culture in

bachelor’s degree in history, medieval studies, or a related field.
Master of Arts in Cultural Heritage Studies:
Academic Research, Policy and Management (Two Years)
This interdisciplinary and interdepartmental program focuses on developing aptitudes for
critical assessment of tangible structures and objects such as buildings, monuments, and
works of art, as well as intangible heritage like traditions, languages, and knowledge.

cultural resource management. Planned start date: September 2013.
Doctor of Philosophy in Medieval Studies
The doctoral program is designed for candidates pursuing careers in teaching and research.

Miranda Myrberg
Country of origin: Sweden
“ I became very interested in the the former
Yugoslavia during my first master’s degree
studies when I was examining regional feminist
anti-militaristic organizations that were
cooperating with one another to resist aggressive
nationalist agendas. For my CEU master’s I chose
to study Bosnian culture and the resistance to
nationalism with the use of arts-based initiatives,
which really demands a lot of local time and
integration into the art scene. CEU’s location
has allowed me to easily travel back and forth
to conduct my research.“
