About us
Sheepsetting Pre-School provides sessional care for 2– 5 year olds
within a purpose built building set in the grounds of Cross-in-Hand CE
School in the market town of Heathfield, East Sussex. We provide a
safe and stimulating environment, both inside and outside which
promotes learning and socialisation through play.
Staff are aware that their own friendliness, care and courtesy provide
a positive model for the children. Care is taken to endorse desirable
behaviour and unacceptability of misbehaviour made clear immediately
by explanation and not personal blame. Visitors will note that we work
hard to promote social skills, including the art of learning to share,
showing kindness and being helpful towards other people.

Stage Curriculum (EYFS). It is a comprehensive statutory
framework that sets the standards for the learning, development and
care of children from birth to five. It covers three prime areas of
learning and four specific areas of learning these are listed below with
some examples of activities which encourge development within these
area.
Prime Areas
Personal and Social and Emotional Development
Physical Development
Communication and Language
Specific Areas
Literacy
Mathematics
Understanding the World
Expressive Arts and Design
At all times we maintain a 1:4 adult to child ratio for the 2 year olds
and a 1:8 ratio for 3 – 5year olds.
Key Person
Each child will have a key person allocated to them who takes extra
time to observe and interact with your child. They will keep records of
your child’s learning which will be shared with you at regular intervals.
In the year before your child attends school they are known as ‘Rising
5’s’. These children will sometimes be encouraged to participate in
more structured activities either individually or within a small group,
e.g. letter and number games, name recognition, turn taking games.
These focused activities help support your child’s transition into the
Reception Year.
We also visit the library within Cross in Hand school once a week.
Children with Additional Needs (SEN)
Our SENCo (Special Educational Needs Coordinator) is Jo Baldock. If
you have any queries or questions relating to any additional or special
needs that your child may have then please speak to Jo. The PreSchool liaise and work closely with outside agencies with the aim of
being able to provide specific support for children with additional
needs.
Every child is seen as an individual learner and staff ensure that your
child is supported and challenged appropriately to their ability in order
that they reach their full potential
Committee
We are a committee run Pre-school. The committee is responsible for
writing and reviewing Pre-School policies, fundraising, employment of
staff and strategic decisions. They meet about once a month and
consist of a Chairperson, a Secretary, a Treasurer and any number of
general committee members. An Annual General Meeting (AGM) is held
in the Autumn term to re-elect and nominate existing and new members.
It is a great way to become actively involved in the Pre-school.
Policies and Procedures
All copies or our policies are available for parents and carers on
request.
We are a registered charity and a member of the Pre-School Learning
Alliance (PLA).
We are monitored and regulated by Ofsted. In February 2012 we were
rated as ‘good’ with the effectiveness of our engagement with parents
and carers as ‘outstanding’.
Please note: Attendance at Sheepsetting Pre-School does not
automatically guarantee your child’s admission into Cross in Hand CEP
School on reaching school age. Normal county application procedures
need to be undertaken for all children attending their preschool
provision. Website: www.eastsussex.gov/schooladmissions
