Why are coaches obsessed with
“getting wide” on offense?
This article will
change your life!
Dr. United tells you what you
should do about your kid
not playing aggressively
enough!

No, they are not compensating for anything! Getting wide
opens up space to pass and move the ball. Check out this
excellent video that Neil Hammond made for the 2007
Girls! https://youtu.be/0qeV7EBdPrk

RULES RULE!
My son/daughter just got
fouled, and the stupid ref
just yelled “play on.” Why
does he hate my kid?
Good news! The referee does
not hate you or your family! I
bet if you think back, you will
realize that in spite of the foul
your team was progressing well
up the field. The referee saw
this and applied ADVANTAGE.
When a referee sees that
stopping play and calling the
foul will actually hurt the team
that was fouled (because they
are progressing well despite the
foul) the referee puts both
hands out and forward and yells
“play on.” If the team that
committed the foul quickly
regains the ball, the referee can
then blow the whistle and give
the ball to the fouled team. He/
she can also wait for an
appropriate time to stop the
game and go back and
administer yellow or red cards
as appropriate. It is very
common for parents who do not
know the rules of soccer to
become furious at a referee who
is doing his/her job correctly!
Don’t be the angry loud parent
who doesn’t know the rules!
2017 Spring, Edition No. 2
1. T/F A goal kick must be taken from one of the corners of the
goal area.
2. T/F Defenders should charge into the penalty box when a
young goalie hits a goal kick to try to score immediately.
3.T/F It is legal to play soccer without shin guards.
ANSWERS:
1.
False. It can be taken from anywhere in the goal area
2.
False. On a goal kick, the ball must completely exit the penalty

exits the area, it is a rekick.
3.
False. Shin guards are required in the FIFA Laws of the Game.
The specifications for what is acceptable are determined by
individual leagues.

ASK DR. UNITED………
My kid is underachieving because he/
she is not aggressive enough. What
should I do?
Danger! Danger! Just read the question to yourself!
Underachieving compared to whom? To a teammate? To
a sibling? To Lionel Messi? Not aggressive enough for
whom? It has been Dr. United’s experience that
aggression can change over time (especially at puberty.)
Is your player having fun? Are they practicing soccer on
their own? If not, as a parent, you really need to ask
yourself why your child is playing travel soccer. There is
an addictive rush to seeing our kids score goals and be
successful. However, as a parent, it is vital that you DO
NOT LIVE YOUR SPORTS DREAMS
VICARIOUSLY THROUGH YOUR CHILD!
2017 Spring, Edition No. 2
Your most pressing BRYSA/United parenting
questions answered by a multi-player parent
and coach still trying to figure it all out.
When your player succeeds or struggles, it is your child
succeeding or struggling, not you. Please do not make
your child responsible for your happiness. The key to
being more aggressive is to practice and develop skills
that will lead to confidence on the ball. Confident
players are naturally more assertive. After a game there
is a tendency among some parents to immediately start
criticizing and telling their player what they did wrong.
Is this likely to increase your child’s confidence/
aggression? It is unfortunate that there seems to be
more tears and frustration for players than laughter after
games. Try “I just love watching you play.” This article
