Christian traditions.
SCIENTIFIC & TECHNOLOGICAL
UNDERSTANDING
SCIENCE:
Y4 will be learning about habitats this term. The children
will begin to understand the concept of a habitat, how it
provides the organisms found there with conditions for
life and how animals depend on plants, or other animals
which eat plants, for food.
We will also be learning about friction; what it is, how it
is measured and its importance in everyday life.
DESIGN TECHNOLOGY:
The children will be designing and making their own
healthy drinks in DT next term; a project which will build
on their knowledge of healthy eating.
UNDERSTANDING THE ARTS
MUSIC: We will be continuing to learn the violin on
Wednesdays; it would be very helpful if violins could go
home each week to facilitate practise and ensure the
classroom is clear. The children will also be learning a
range of songs from all over the world as part of our
context this term.
ART: This term the children will be exploring journeys
through art. They will be learning about how artists from
across the world represent journeys using a range of
media. They will also be exploring how symbols are used
and will be creating their own symbols for their own
journey. The children will also be creating shoes from
recycled materials as part of our Art Week in February.
UNDERSTANDING PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT,
HEALTH & WELLBEING:
PSHE/SEAL: Using the SEAL programme we will be
focusing on the topics ‘Going for Goals’ and ‘Good to be
me’.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION: The children will still be
swimming on Tuesdays and will be developing their
hockey skills on Monday afternoons.
COMPUTING:
Year 4 will begin the term by creating a table to list
ingredients for a favourite recipe alongside the
ingredient’s country of origin. They will go on to use
Textease Turtle to plot a journey encompassing all the
countries these ingredients have come from and will then
create a branching database using some of this
information.
HISTORICAL, GEOGRAPHICAL & SOCIAL
UNDERSTANDING
GEOGRAPHY:
The children will be learning about countries from all over
the world. We will begin by looking briefly at our local
area (building on last year’s work) and at how to use maps
and keys. We will be researching where different foods
come from and thinking about why certain foods are most
often produced in particular countries (e.g. the climate).
Year 4 will be developing their research skills by choosing
a country to research and creating their own mini-project
alongside the work we will all be completing together.
They may choose to build on the research they undertook
for homework or may wish to learn about a different
country. They will be using books from the class
(including atlases), books from the library and the internet
to help them with this research and they may wish to draw
on family expertise too!
