PURPOSE OF POSITION
The Health, Safety, Environment and Quality (HSEQ) Manager reports to the Chief Executive
Officer (CEO) and is a member of the Executive Leadership Team for MainPower New Zealand
Limited (the Company).
The HSEQ Manager leads a culture of health, safety, quality and respect for the environment
across the organisation; with a focus on safety first. In undertaking these accountabilities, the
HSQE Manager will ensure that the MainPower business is supported by appropriate health
and safety advice such that the requirements of both regulatory and accreditation
requirements are met, delivering implementable health and safety initiatives consistent with
MainPower’s strategic objectives and annual business plan.

Quality Strategy – Development
and Implementation
Develops and implements a
strategic plan for the HSEQ that
supports the overall business
objectives of the Company.

Leadership across the Company.


Develops for consideration and acceptance by the
CEO, a comprehensive strategic plan and road map
for the HSEQ Function that aligns to the overall
business strategy of the Company and provides a
framework for the company to achieve a safety first
approach and zero harm outcomes.
With the support of the Finance Manager and finance
team, prepares an annual budget for the HSEQ
function. Reports to the CEO periodically on actual
costs versus budget as required; providing
comprehensive commentary to explain material
differences in expenditure versus expectation.
Develops key HSEQ performance measures for the
HSEQ Function and the Company as a whole to
enable tracking of performance against the annual
strategy and road maps.
Implements HSEQ strategic plan and road maps
through leadership of the HSEQ function and
providing support to the Executive Leadership Team.
Achieves performance measures established.
Regularly reviews and reports to the CEO as
appropriate regarding implementation of the HSEQ
plans including achievement of key performance
measures.
Supports the Board undertake site visits and
monitoring of the business’s health and safety
performance.
Encourages and supports the work of the health and
safety committee and health and safety
representatives.
In accordance with the strategic plan and road maps
and through leadership of the HSEQ function,
ensures all Health and Safety policies and systems are
fit for purpose, compliant and accord with the overall
objectives of the Company.
Ensures the HSEQ Function consistently and
constantly complies with all Health and Safety
policies and legislative requirements.
In conjunction with the Executive Leadership Team,
ensures all new staff are properly inducted and

programme through effective proactive safety
management; changing the health and safety
conversation; improving employee attitude and
morale through engagement; and communicating to
ensure the message is heard.
Ensures the CEO is briefed on all Health and Safety
incidents; immediately in the event of a major
incident.
In accordance with the strategic plan and road maps
and through leadership of the HSEQ function, leads
and fosters a culture of continual environmental
improvement across all MainPower sites and assets
through a day to day environmental focus.
Monitors key environmental issues and impacts
ensures the Executive Leadership Team and CEO are
kept informed of incidents or issues which may
adversely affect the company’s reputation or lead to
legal proceedings.
Ensures that the Company complies with all
applicable environmental standards and performance
and legislative requirements.
Reports to the CEO on any environmental issues or
breaches of legislation.
In accordance with the strategic plan and road maps
and through leadership of the HSEQ function, leads a
culture of quality across all aspects of the company.
Champions and sponsors projects to enhance
operational quality and to attain relevant quality
standards (eg: ISO accreditations).
Monitors quality standards and remedies breaches of
standards through guidance and training as
necessary.

as necessary to ensure objectives are met.
Documentation and Training

Ensures that all HSEQ systems and
processes are documented and
remain current and effective.
Ensures all staff are properly 
trained in all relevant HSEQ
systems and processes.
Through leadership of the HSEQ function, ensures all
HSEQ systems and processes are appropriately
documented, implemented and communicated using
most appropriate methods.

contributing ideas and discussing issues.
Ensures the CEO is immediately made aware of issues
regarding business systems that could materially
impact on Company operations.
Performs any other such tasks as may be reasonably
requested from time to time by the CEO.
Actively participates in industry forums that support
the ongoing development and implementation of
safe work practices, safe operating procedures and
industry rules and guides.

Has extensive experience in a health and safety leadership role.
