June 28, 2015 - St Matthew the Evangelist

THIRTEENTH SUNDAY
IN ORDINARY TIME
JUNE 28, 2015
The synagogue official and the woman with
the hemorrhage are convinced that God
“formed man to be imperishable” – an
imperishability that begins now in their
present plight. How can they be so sure?
Because they have encountered Jesus Christ,
to whom they hand themselves over in their
certainty. God made the human person in
“the image of his own nature.” It is to that
relationship with the Infinite that this man and
this woman appeal with infinite hope,
convinced that the Lord will draw them clear,
preserve them from the pit, and change their
mourning into dancing…which he does.

***************************************************************************************************************************** **************
Today we are invited to reflect on life and to hope
in an imperishable existence. We rarely advert to
life until it is threatened. Then it appears all the
more precious to us for its very fragility. // The
faith of Jairus, whose twelve-year old daughter is
at death’s door, and the faith of that desperate
woman whose life has been ebbing away with her
blood for twelve years should be our faith. At the
juncture of these two heartwarming stories, there
is in fact but one point of emphasis. Jesus does
not disdain the naïve, almost superstitious faith of
the woman with a hemorrhage who furtively
touches him in the hope of being healed. Nor does
he ignore the frantic faith of Jairus who has no
other answer for the doubting crowd. To them, it is
all too clear that no one can do anything against
death. For Jesus, death is but a sleep which
awakens to a morning of resurrection. // Hope
sleeps in each of us. We must regularly take its
hand, awaken it, set it in motion, This marvel is
possible only by faith in the One who can make our
nights, however dark they may be, give way to an
Easter morning.
THE WEEKLY CALENDAR: All peoples, clap your hands. Cry to God
with shouts of joy! (Ps (47) 46:2).
THE THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, JUNE 28 –
SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION: 8:00 AM and 10:15 AM.
WE WELCOME THE MOST REV. BISHOP JOHN O.
BARRES TO OUR PARISH. HE WILL CELEBRATE
10:30 AM MASS TODAY. WE WERE INFORMED OF
THE BISHOP’S VISIT THIS PAST WEDNESDAY!
THE FAMILY PRAYER CHALICE FOR VOCATIONS (FPC):
Jesus told us to ask the Harvest Master to send laborers into
his harvest. May the prayers of our participating families bear
fruit. Thanks to TOM AND M.R. MUNDY (8:30 AM) for hosting the
FPC for Vocations. Sign up in Church Vestibule.
FAMILY PERSPECTIVE: The healing of the woman and the child in
today’s gospel is a reminder we are all wounded. We retreat to those we love
looking for acceptance, listening, understanding and support. Families must be
healing communities where Jesus is present in our care for one another.
PRO-LIFE REFLECTION: Nearly four thousand innocent lives are taken
by surgical abortion each day in this land of the free and home of the brave,
whose lady holds high the torch of welcome to human life. What hypocrisy that
a nation that welcomed human beings from all over the world now destroys
their own preborn citizens.
STEWARDSHIP: “…as a matter of equality your abundance at the present
SUMMER FESTIVAL FOOD
time should supply their want, so that their abundance may supply your want,
that there may be equality.” - 2 CORINTHIANS 8:14. Not only are we

At the St. Joseph Center for Special
Learning in Pottsville, children with
intellectual and developmental disabilities
have a special place to learn – a place
where they are nurtured and challenged to
reach their full potential. The Bishop’s
Annual Appeal supports the St. Joseph
Center and two other diocesan special
learning centers – where students receive
individualized instruction and benefit from
the values instilled by a Catholic
education. Twenty-five school-aged
children and eight adults attend the St.
Joseph Center. Parents of students at the
special learning center report that their
children grow socially and spiritually,
while learning life skills and receiving
encouragement to be as independent as
their capabilities allow. Many talk about the
huge improvement in their children since
their arrival at the special learning center.
One St. Joseph Center for Special
Learning parent said, “I consider St.
Joseph Center a work of art, with funding
from the BAA as one of the colors that
bring the masterpiece to life.” The
Bishop’s Annual Appeal provides support
for many important ministries, including
Education; Health and Human Services;
Catholic Life and Evangelization; and the
Education and Formation of Seminarians,
Priests and Deacons. Please make your
gift today at www.2015baa.org or call
800.831.4443.
FOR IT IS IN GIVING
THAT WE RECEIVE!
2015 BISHOP’S ANNUAL
APPEAL: As of today, our
parishioners have raised $15,442
from 142 parishioners representing 75% of our parish goal of
$20,726 and 26.01% of our total
number of registered families.
REMEMBER, EVERY GIFT
COUNTS, NO MATTER HOW
SMALL. You can make your
gift online at www.2015baa.org
or drop off your pledge form in
the collection basket at church.
We hope our Parishioners will
demonstrate that we are a Parish
that cares by making their
donation to the Appeal!
