How do you learn to dance?

How do you learn to dance?
Approach: Technical, Dive-Right-in,
Creative Movement
Fundamentals Movement Experiences:
1. Analyzing the action of the spin
2. Determining locomotor versus axial
motion
3. Working with rhythmic coordination
4. Moving with functional alignment
5. Moving from your center
Actions of the spine
► Bend,
twist, extend
► Your spine is composed of 26 vertebrae, and
any of the three actions is possible at each
of the joints
► Choose a shape
► to create from the
► images.
► What action are
► You displaying?
Locomotor Versus Axial
► Improvisation:
start in your big x on the
floor try to move your body as you image
your hand and feet are glued to the ground
for 8 counts, release your hands and feet
and try to cover as much space as possible
in 24 count returning to your x. Try this 4
times on the last set end in stillness
Rhythmic Coordination
► Dancers
are aware that rhythmic
coordination is vital for dance and is
intentional.
► Try our across the floor. Clap its rhythm.
Once your understand the rhythmic
coordination of a phrase it will free your
mind to perform the movements
Functional Alignment
► Alignment
is proper body placement
► All bodies are different. You must understand
your strengths and weakness and try to balance
them to become a better dancer. You are
constantly balancing the forces of nature, resisting
the pull of gravity, and responding to millions of
muscular changes in the course of a day.
► When you are creating dance you must be
conscious of working so that your joints are
protected and your flexibility and strength are
accessed easily
Moving from your center
► When
you dance your center is your spiritual,
physical and emotional source of strength and
balance. Moving from your center means having
the ability to be completely invested in your
movement.
► The center is not only the spot slightly below your
navel but is your trunk, breath, fluidity of the
spine, ease of direction and weight changes
► under curve quarter turn spiral to the floor pass
threw x and role up other side
Your task
► Apply
your creative efforts to the five
fundamentals of dance and create an interesting
dance phrase. Apply action of the spine,
locomotor and axial movement, rhythmic
coordination, functional alignment, moving from
your center. Think about what the audience will
see. This is a solo project. Your phrase should be
like a Mini-skirt long enough to cover the subject
and short enough to make it interesting. You
must perform and teach this phrase.
