Project funded by European Commission “DG Climate Action” TRACCS: Transport data collection supporting the quantitative analysis of measures relating to transport and climate change Peer review round 1 (August/September 2012) Access to database: The web site of the project is http://traccs.emisia.com . Under the ‘Data’ menu item, please login with username ‘traccs_user’ and password ‘access_data’. Once logged in, please find the database located in the ‘Deliverables’ folder on the left. 21 Antoni Tritsi str. | Service Post 2 | GR 57001 | Thessaloniki | T +30 2310 473352 | F +30 2310 804110 | www.emisia.com Project funded by European Commission “DG Climate Action” Short description of the database: The database will be used to deliver the final (processed) dataset of the project. The proposed structure in MS Access has been produced as part of the project’s deliverables, but it is still open to changes and improvements according to feedback received. Therefore, we would very much appreciate to have your comments and suggestions. The database has been populated with dummy data so that one can check its operability, but not really extract any useful information at this stage of the project. Only one country has been included in the database to keep the file size limited. The following paragraphs describe the rationale and structure of the database. Data to be stored and their required resolution The data to be stored in this database and their resolution is summarized below. General Info Temporal coverage Annually 2005-2010 Vehicle categories 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Mopeds and Motorcycles (L category) Passenger Cars (M1) Buses (M2, M3) Light Commercial Vehicles (N1) Heavy Goods Vehicles (N2, N3) Vehicle Classification according to two main criteria Vehicle Category Criterion 1: Vehicle type Criterion 2: Propulsion Mopeds and Motorcycles 2-stroke 4-stroke Gasoline Passenger Cars Market Segment (small, compact, medium, large, luxury, MPV, SUV, or any other similar segmentation) Petrol (Gasoline) Diesel LPG CNG Flexifuel (E85) Gasoline Hybrid Buses Urban Coach Diesel LPG CNG/Biogas B30 N1/I N1/II N1/III Petrol (Gasoline) Diesel LPG CNG Flexifuel (E85) Gasoline Hybrid Light Commercial Vehicles 21 Antoni Tritsi str. | Service Post 2 | GR 57001 | Thessaloniki | T +30 2310 473352 | F +30 2310 804110 | www.emisia.com Project funded by European Commission “DG Climate Action” GVW types as per COPERT/HBEFA (Rigid from ≤7.5t to >32t, Articulated from 14-20t to 50-60t) Heavy Goods Vehicles Petrol (Gasoline) Diesel The following criteria are also used: Age distribution of vehicles. Ownership of passenger cars (corporate, self-employed professional, private). Data to be stored Data type Short Explanation Number of vehicles Number of operating vehicles in the stock, classified by age New registrations / De-registrations Annual new registrations / Vehicles exiting the stock, per age Second hand registrations Registrations of second-hand vehicles, according to age Activity data Mileage/passenger-km/vehicle-km/tonne-km (per age) Price and VAT Registration and Ownership taxes Insurance, Operation, Maintenance, and Toll costs Labour cost Purchase cost per vehicle type Per vehicle type Per vehicle type For drivers of commercial vehicles Type of database A relational database has been selected to store the data, because it offers ease of use (tables with rows and columns), flexibility (combined information originally stored in individual tables can be retrieved), precision (no ambiguity in the final dataset), and data independence. Tables’ creation Each data item component will be stored in a different table, which however follows a generic structure. This generic structure consists of the index keys and values of the corresponding data component. The list of columns (generic table) follows below. Not all of these columns are present in all tables, since not all components will be collected at the same level of detail. List of columns (generic table) Column Name Description Field Type CountryID The ID for each country Integer YearID The ID for the different years Integer VehicleID The vehicle ID, e.g. passenger car, light duty Integer vehicle etc 21 Antoni Tritsi str. | Service Post 2 | GR 57001 | Thessaloniki | T +30 2310 473352 | F +30 2310 804110 | www.emisia.com Project funded by European Commission “DG Climate Action” TypeID The vehicle segment ID, or vehicle size ID Integer PropulsionID The propulsion ID, e.g. gasoline, diesel, electric Integer etc Age The vehicle age Value The corresponding value for population, mileage, cost etc UnitID The unit ID for each component, e.g. gr/km, Integer number of vehicles, vehicle kilometres etc Integer the table, e.g. Double A list of all tables in the database follows below. To avoid discrepancies in the data, a unique index including a number of primary keys has been created for each table. The index includes the primary keys shown below, which are different according to the different level of detail contained in each table. Primary keys included in each table index Column Name Key Type CountryID Primary YearID Primary VehicleID Primary TypeID Primary PropulsionID Primary Age Primary Relationships of the different tables Relationships between different tables have been established, by linking certain keys, to make easier the creation of queries. This is the point where the “useful” information is produced (final, easily understandable, information for the end-users). Hence, at this point, some needs for slight modifications of the database may arise, e.g. to answer to questions that have not been foreseen. A list of the queries included in the database with a short description follows below. This table should be considered as indicative at this stage, and subject to changes and further improvements at a later stage. A primitive interface has been designed for the version of the database for this peer review process. Further specific questions for feedback: There are a number of open issues related to the project, for which we kindly ask for your feedback/opinion. 1. We haven’t found yet many data about ownership distinction of passenger cars (corporate, self-employed professional, private). Could you please give us some ideas for possible sources? 2. We are also very much interested in obtaining data about loading factors and cargo-types percentage profiles per vehicle class for freight transport. Could you also give us some feedback on that? 3. EUROSTAT road freight transport methodology (total/national/international/cabotage): There is a preference to report national activity according to truck registration plate and not territorial activity. That is national emissions are calculated on the basis of the nationally registered stock by adjusting mileage so that total energy statistics are met. The alternative would be to consider also foreign vehicle stock operating on the national territory. Could we have your opinion on that? 4. Commodity/cargo classes and trip/distance bands: We have agreed to use the following cargo classes (no commodity split) and the following distance bands for all freight modes of transport. Cargo classes o o o o Liquid bulk goods Dry bulk goods Containers Other Distance bands o o Urban (by definition <300 km) Non-urban 21 Antoni Tritsi str. | Service Post 2 | GR 57001 | Thessaloniki | T +30 2310 473352 | F +30 2310 804110 | www.emisia.com Project funded by European Commission “DG Climate Action” o o o o 0-300 km (EUROSTAT data for road freight to become publicly available) 300-500 km 500-1000 km >1000 km Are these cargo classes relevant for your models and analysis? 5. Do you have any other comments and suggestions about the data structure? (Please keep in mind discussions and conclusions of the expert group meeting hosted by DG Climate Action in January.) 6. Do you have any other comments about the actual MS Access file? 21 Antoni Tritsi str. | Service Post 2 | GR 57001 | Thessaloniki | T +30 2310 473352 | F +30 2310 804110 | www.emisia.com
