Students involved in Career and Technology Education Welding learn through hands-on experiences in the construction of individual and group projects and activities. SAFETY is always of primary importance to me. Instruction in the safe and correct operation of tools and equipment is given, and close supervision is maintained at all times. Although every precaution is taken to prevent an accident, a certain risk is involved due to the nature of the experience and the learning environment. The school carries NO medical insurance on the students. There is an $75.00 lab fee required of each student taking Career and Technology Education - Welding. The lab fee is used for Welder Certification Fees, purchase materials and supplies used in constructing various required activities, labs and task. A student wishing to build a project may purchase the required materials at an additional cost. Thank you for your help and assistance in providing your child with a “real world” experience offered through Career and Technology Education. Please review with your child the attached forms. These forms need to be signed and returned along with the $75 lab fee as soon as possible. Cypress Park will not accept personal checks for payments. Students should have all materials necessary with them as they enter the lab to complete the day’s assignment. i.e., paper, pencil, supplies and PPE (Personal Protective Equipment.) Technology Education is an activity-based class. Students are required to participate in all activities. Machine Usage Before a student is allowed to use any machinery, he/she must pass a safety exam and a proficiency test with a score of 100%. Students who violate the safety rules will be placed on a probationary status and may be required to retake the appropriate exams, or lose their privileges to use the machinery. Students are required to use safety glasses and PPE in the operation or observation of all machinery. Lab Environment Students are required to maintain a clean and orderly lab atmosphere. The lab must be clean and all tools and materials returned prior to dismissal. Students must respect others and the property of others. Students who mischievously damage tools or materials are responsible for the replacement cost. In the event that a student damages a tool or finds a damaged tool, it should be reported immediately. This way, it can be repaired to avoid further damage to the tool or injury to the operator. Dress Student Provided Students should wear leather shoes or boots, steel toe boots encouraged. Pants required, blue jeans or cotton pants. No shorts or synthetic fabric allowed. Long sleeve cotton shirt or welding jacket will be worn when welding. (Fire Resistant welding jackets sold at a discount price through the shop) Long hair should be secured to avoid moving parts. Jewelry should be removed. Students will be required to dress appropriately and wear the required equipment based on the procedure. Welding gloves, welding helmets and safety glasses will be provided in the classroom. No talking while teacher is talking. 2. Follow all directions and safety rules. 3. No horseplay. 4. Never use any equipment without first obtaining teacher’s permission. 5. Report any damages or accidents to the teacher immediately. 6. Always do your clean up job, “no exceptions”. 7. Respect others and their property. 8. Always have a good attitude. 9. Never distract a machine operator. 10. Always have pencil, pen, paper, safety glasses and wear proper clothing. 11. Mobile phones are not allowed in the lab/shop area for safety reasons. The phones will only be used with teacher permission. Failure to follow the Mobile phone rule will result in the phone being taken up. If the issue happens a second time the phone will be turned in to the main office, parent will need to pick up and pay the associated school fee. Be in your assigned seat when the bell rings. 2. Do not leave your seat unless you have permission 3. Have pencil/pen and paper with you. 4. Be courteous, polite, and do not talk unless given permission. 5. Follow the substitute’s directions. Do not argue. All work must be turned in at the end of the period. 6. NEVER touch a machine or tool when Mr. Peak is not in the lab/shop. 7. No horseplay, “throwing things”, or running is allowed. Keep your hands to yourself. 8. Do not ask to use the phone or go into the office. 9. Do not go in the tool room, storage room or in the lab/shop. 10. In the Industrial Technology Education laboratories, the SAFETY and Education of the students are our primary concern. It is the objective of CY-FAIR Independent School District and the Industrial Technology Education instructor to provide a SAFE environment for students to develop and apply skills in a business and/or industrial setting. To establish a SAFE environment, certain behaviors cannot be allowed in an Industrial Technology laboratory. Some behaviors can be hazardous to the individual student and/or other students in the laboratory. A student displaying such behavior may be dismissed from certain course activities. A decision of dismissal from the course or the course activities will be made by a committee comprised of the instructor, counselor, and principal. Grounds for Dismissal 1. Willful injury of another student and/or the instructor. 2. Accidental injury to the student, another student, and/or the instructor as a result of misconduct. 3. Intentional theft, damage or destruction of tools, equipment, and supplies. The student is liable for the replacement cost of the damage. 4. A student who repeatedly fails to comply with instructor’s directives and established Industrial Technology Education policies and procedures. It is our desire to provide a SAFE educations atmosphere for the students to develop problem-solving and creative abilities involving the materials, tools, processes, and products of industry.
