SLOs (Student Learning Outcomes)
1. Form six tenses of Latin verbs in four conjugations in active voice; in two conjugations in passive
voice.
2. Recognize and translate accurately into English verbs in six tenses. Decline nouns in at least three
declensions and show understanding of agreement of nouns and adjectives.
3. Recognize Latin nouns of at least three declensions in six case forms. "Decode" the significance of
the case endings and verb endings of Latin words in a sentence and understand the English meaning
of the Latin sentence.
4. Recognize Latin roots of English vocabulary and modern foreign languages.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to....
1. Enunciate selected basic Latin vocabulary in both the classical and
the Italic pronunciation.
2. Interpret Latin phrases currently used in America in the field of
medicine, law, literature and sciences and expressions of Latin
origin in everyday educated English.
3. Recognize Latin roots, prefixes and suffixes in literary and colloquial English.
4. Compare English word-order with Latin word-inflection.
5. Categorize the different parts of speech in and out of clause-content.
6. Compare the variety of prepositional phrases in English with the
Latin usage of declensions and conjugations.
7. Analyze the role of each word within a clause, of each clause within
compound sentences with coordinate only or with simple relative-declarative.
8. Compare active and passive voice of verbs in both English and Latin
by expressing the same thoughts in both forms.

9. Translate from and into English, orally impromptu and in writing,
compound sentences in the imperative and indicative mood of verbs,
modeling grammar and vocabulary after Latin authors of the Golden
and Silver Age.
10. Appreciate and compare similarities and differences in philosophical
and ethical thinking between those authors and the world we live in.
11. Show familiarity with names and works of major figures of the Roman
world, particularly during the Golden and Silver Age and with the
Latin used in the Vulgata as compared to Cicero''s Catlinaria.

Latin pronunciation - Latin word order
Declensions (Nouns, Adjectives, Pronouns)
Conjugations (The Indicative, the Imperative of the verb to be and of all
four conjugations-Active and Passive
Special attention to Personal and Demonstrative Pronouns and adjectives
The Relative Clause with Indicative
Translation of sentences out of excerpts from classic-writings related to
the grammatical points in question.
Special stress on English derivatives (prefixes, related words)
Some information on major Latin authors.
Covers chapters 1-20 of the basic text.
For each chapter, the student is expected to work on the section "Sententiae Antiquae" which is later analyzed in class.
Every two-three chapters, the students are given written 50 minute tests
in class, or a take-home assignment from the literary excerpts found in
section "Loci Antiqui" of the textbook.
The final exam is a two hour written test.
